Thirty-sixth Foundation Day Lecture delivered by Dr Shantha Sinha

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) celebrated its Thirty-Sixth Foundation Day on October 28, 2009. This year, Dr Shantha Sinha, Chairperson, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights was invited to deliver the annual Foundation Day Lecture.

The theme of the lecture by Dr Sinha was 'Deficit Childhood-Implications for India's Democracy'. Dr Sinha spoke about the need for a stringent anti-child labour law. She also emphasized the role the State should play in educating children. She pointed out that there is no law to safeguard children in the age group of 0-6 years under any section. She hailed the newly enacted Right to Education Act as a 'great law' and said that education is the best way to prevent the exploitation and trafficking of children.

Dr Sinha added that it is now the compulsion of the State to send children to school and not parents. Terming the students of IIMB as the 'best minds in India' Dr Sinha expressed the hope that they would contribute to the protection of children's rights.

Earlier, the event began with an invocation by IIMB alumnus Manasi Prasad (PGP '07), followed by the lighting of lamp by the chief guest and other dignitaries.

Professor Pankaj Chandra, Director IIMB welcomed the gathering and made the introductory remarks.
