IIMB welcomes PGP and FPM students

On June 13, the campus was abuzz as registration forms were filled, hostel rooms inspected and campus toured by excited students and their proud families

13 June, 2016: “You will have your job, get the salary, buy a house and car and have a vacation…all the nice cool stuff. But you need to think what else you are doing that is beyond yourself. That’s the question I am urging you all to think of. Don’t get lost in the algorithm, the spreadsheet and the model, life is way beyond that. So learn to imagine, learn to do things that arise the passion, the human in you and make a change,” urged Sanjay Anandram, a well-known name in the Venture Capital & PE space, and alumnus of IIMB at the inauguration of the 2016 Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) and the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) on June 13, 2016 (Monday), at the IIMB auditorium.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration.

Recalling his days at IIMB, Sanjay Anandram, investor, entrepreneur, start-up mentor and founding partner of JumpStartUp Venture Fund, said to the incoming batches: “All of you are competitive; you need to learn how to be collaborative while being competitive. Learn to live with differences without being disagreeable, participate in events like sports, music, theatre, cultural fests, and learn to contribute.”

On the need to adapt, he observed: “Every endeavour of human life will be impacted by technology and unless you embrace it you will be left behind.”

Emphasizing the importance of embracing an entrepreneurial mind-set, he said: “We must develop an entrepreneurial mind-set and not just in campuses but inside each one of us, in society, in politics, and as a country. Bengaluru is India’s knowledge entrepreneurship capital. Question the status quo. Ask questions to do stuff better, faster and cheaper and don’t be scared of experimenting or taking risks. Communicate, get people together to be part of such initiatives.”

Earlier in the day, Professor M S Narasimhan, Chairperson, Post Graduate Programme in Management and faculty from the Finance & Accounting area, welcomed the PGP and FPM students to IIMB. Professor Rajendra K Bandi, Chairperson, Admissions & Financial Aid, IIMB and faculty from the Decision Sciences and Information Systems area, shared the batch profile and dwelt briefly on the admissions process. Highlighting IIMB’s most recent achievement of topping the list of best management schools in the country, he said: “We want students with well-rounded abilities in all dimensions. The alumni are also part of the admission process, as they, along with faculty, interview candidates trying to understand them in a better manner than what their grade sheets demonstrate.”

Professor Raghavan Srinivasan, Director Incharge, IIMB, while talking about the wonderful campus and life at IIMB, stressed on the fact that the students, for all their euphoria, needed to understand that they were here to learn, to be successful as managers, as entrepreneurs, and as leaders. “Work hard, work intelligently and enjoy life. Eighteen months from now you are going to shoulder enormous responsibilities and we help you in that transformation process,” he added.

The evening also saw two categories of awards being given to the students who have graduated from PGP1 to PGP2. First it was the Director’s Merit List, awarded to the top 5% of the batch. This year, 22 students are on the coveted list. Then, the section-wise and term-wise toppers were awarded for their efforts. Awards and scholarships, instituted by the alumni were announced.

Students Affairs Council (SAC) President Jinesh Sanjay Papdiwal addressed the students and walked them through the activities on campus.
