Build strategic networks, learn cross-organizational dynamics at IIMB: SAP Senior VP

Inaugurating the orientation session for PGPEM 2016, Uma Rani exhorts participants to evolve as leaders during their time at IIMB

09 April, 2016: “When I came to IIMB with eight years of experience, I knew little of finance or strategy. IIMB helped me make the transition from domain expert to business leader,” said Uma Rani T M, Senior Vice President, SAP, and alumna of the Post Graduate Programme in Software Enterprise Management, IIMB.

As Chief Guest during the inauguration and orientation programme for the PGPEM 2016 batch, held at the IIMB Auditorium on Saturday, April 9, 2016, she explained: “IIMB also kindled my interest for further studies. I learnt to build strategic networks and I learnt cross-organizational dynamics. I learnt to reinvent myself.”

The Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management is a master’s diploma-granting management programme offered by IIMB. The programme is scheduled on Friday afternoons and Saturdays, over about 22 months, to make it accessible to working professionals.

Offering suggestions to the programme participants, she said: “Disruption is the order of the day. Businesses are becoming technology-intensive, so understand technology and understand data. Marketing will be through social intelligence. Look at novel and adaptive thinking, complement the cognitive power of computers with your own problem-solving and adaptive thinking to come up with new ideas.”

Sharing anecdotes from her life as a student at IIMB, she said: “You are as strong as your network. There is a strong peer network at IIMB which helps you.”

Earlier in the day, the ceremonial lamp at the inauguration was lit by the Chief Guest, along with Dean Faculty Ishwar Murthy, Dean of Academic Programmes Sourav Mukherji, Chairperson PGPEM Seema Gupta, and a student representative from the current PGPEM batch.

In her welcome address, Dr. Seema Gupta said the PGPEM attracted participants from diverse industries such as manufacturing, banking, finance, FMCG, consulting, and more. “You will benefit from the diversity we have on campus. You will also get to interact with participants of other programmes. You will learn to manage time efficiently. I am sure you will thrive during your time here.”

Pointing out that the residential aspect of the programme, where participants spend Fridays and Saturdays on campus, added to the overall experience of learning, Dr Seema Gupta suggested that the students make the most of their time at IIMB.

Addressing the participants, Professor Ishwar Murthy said: “The educational journey is very intense and the mode of learning is not linear. You will learn through case methods. As practicing managers it is very important to ask yourself and your co-workers questions, and that is exactly what you will do here as well. I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy the journey.”

Dean of Academic Programmes Sourav Mukherji gave the students an overview of the school’s international partnerships and industry networks which they could build on.

Pointing out that IIMB had recently topped the list of best management institutes in the ‘India Ranking 2016’, prepared by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), he said: “With this feat comes a huge responsibility – to stay at the top.”

He explained at IIMB, students would also get the opportunity to take part in sports, cultural events and social causes. “IIMB is a management institution, which is a lot more than a business school. We are here to create not only business leaders but also leaders in various walks of life,” he added.
