Faculty Testimonials

“Having joined IIM-B in 2018, I attended the New Faculty Orientation Workshop (NFOW) a few months later and found it instrumental in getting me up to speed with different aspects of the Institute, faculty requirements, and available resources. Perspectives from faculty and colleagues on their successes/failures, what works and what does not in a classroom, and developing a balanced workload were some of the items that were discussed. It is important to understand the “culture” of an organization; every university/college is a living, breathing environment and having an open discussion with colleagues on how to measure the pulse of an organization is an important factor in faculty success, and doing this early on with new faculty is a valuable exercise. I got to meet a lot of colleagues as part of this workshop, and furthermore, guest speakers, case teaching pedagogies, and peer evaluation of faculty teaching; all of this was conducted in a collegial and friendly environment and added weight to the program. I truly appreciate the efforts of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at IIM-B in putting the NFOW program together and bringing faculty from diverse disciplines onto a common platform – one which delivers quality content in the classroom and drives a research agenda.”

-Jitamitra Desai, Associate Professor, Decision Sciences, IIMB

“The NFOW is meant to give newly inducted faculty members a sense of ownership to the IIMB community and culture. The three-day workshop is well woven to give participants the right mix of institutional expectations and the ambience it provides to ensure members of the faculty are able to understand the philosophy behind these expectations - whether it is teaching, research or service to the institute. In the midst of the pandemic - ensuring that new employees onboard and stay committed and motivated to the organisations values is something every organisation around the world is struggling to ensure. The NFOW was conducted online - with some of the faculty joining from various locations in India and abroad - yet the program was conducted in a manner that everyone stayed connected and rooted to the campus located in Bangalore. I think this is a crucial aspect that the program was able to do successfully, while addressing the need of the participants to continue to be invested and motivated to perform their best. As a participant, if I was able to articulate, absorb and assimilate this- it well indicates the strength of the program.”

-Deepti Ganapathy, Visiting Assistant Professor, Management Communication, IIMB

"The NFOW was best designed to provide a nice prelude to the system at IIM Bangalore with an objective to enable us to quickly align ourselves to the core values of the Institute. It not only set the expectations for us but also gave us insights on how to meet those expectations. It touched upon various dimensions (be it drivers of learning, design of courses or case writing and teaching) that a faculty needs to focus on in order to excel in teaching and research endeavours at IIM Bangalore. Overall, the workshop was useful and thoughtful."

-Deepak Chandrashekar, Assistant Professor, Strategy, IIMB

"As a newbie faculty at IIMB, I found the 3-day New Faculty Workshop to be extremely valuable. I liked the fact that it covered a variety of topics not just on the technicalities of teaching (case teaching & writing, understanding the drivers of learning, course design & administration, etc.), but several other important aspects related to academics at our institute as well (balancing between teaching and research, evolution of academic environment under various directors, etc.). We were also introduced to various programs that IIMB offers, along with special academic initiatives (like MOOCs using digital learning platforms, and startup incubation). All the speakers were knowledgeable, articulate, engaging, and extremely patient with responding to the queries. The only thing I felt missing from the workshop was the social interaction over lunch with the presenters and other new faculty, which unfortunately was not possible in the online-only mode owing to the pandemic situation. Overall, I am thankful to CTL and especially Prof. Sourav Mukherji for their hard work in conducting an excellent workshop for the benefit of all the new faculty members. Kudos to them!"

-Shankhadeep Banerjee, Assistant Professor, Information Systems, IIMB

“The New Faculty Orientation Workshop (NFOW) was an endeavor from IIMB's Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) to help assistant professors like me in different aspects of teaching. Although I have been at the institute for nearly a year and have already taught a few courses, the whole workshop was still immensely helpful, especially because the speakers were experts in the topics they were talking about. Almost every session provided new ideas that I can incorporate in my teaching styles in future. The discussion with Dr Arun Pereira was particularly enlightening. Same can be said about the Case Discussion and Case Writing session by Dr Sourav Mukherji. The NFOW organizing team carefully included sessions to facilitate the new faculties with more information about teaching and research opportunities in the institute. They were also helpful in addressing the extremely important issue of teaching-research balance for an assistant professor. All in all, I am really happy to have attended this workshop. I would request the CTL to continue hosting these workshops for new faculties in future as well. My sincerest gratitude goes to the organizers and speakers for making this possible.”

-Soudeep Deb, Assistant Professor, Decision Sciences, IIMB

“The NFOW is a timely and comprehensive orientation program. The program is designed with all topics and aspects of the institute, research, and teaching relevant to faculty.  It includes the history, strategic objectives, and immediate focus plans of the institute, sessions on expectation-setting of the faculty members, action-learning, demonstrations of various pedagogies and facilitation techniques, and introduction to the multiple offices and critical initiatives underway. Overall, it is extremely informative and helpful in settling in new faculty into the institute and their roles.”

-Debolina Dutta, Professor of Practice, Organizational Behaviour & HRM, IIMB

“New Faculty Orientation Workshop (NFOW) helped me to equip myself to the demands of teaching at IIMB. It was a 3-day intensive workshop that introduced us to various things that we would come across at IIMB. I continue to use the learnings from these sessions when I design my courses and deliver lectures. The highlight of the workshop was the final session where we, the new faculty delivered a sample of our lectures in front of the senior faculty members and got instant feedback on how to improve our presentation further. Overall, it was a very fruitful and well-organized workshop and hope it continues in the future as well.”

-Murali Srinivasan, Assistant Professor, Economics & Social Science, IIMB

"Teaching and research are equally important in one's academic career. However, a typical doctoral program in India by design trains you more as a researcher than a teacher. Here comes the role of CTL. Their workshops have helped me in enhancing my teaching skills. They also assigned me a teaching mentor who guided me in improving my course in a variety of ways."

-Rajeev R. Tripathi, Assistant Professor, Production & Operations Management, IIMB

“I found the New Faculty Orientation Workshop (NFOW) very useful for a new faculty to get to know IIMB, its vision and operating principles. The workshop provided glimpses to the organizational history, programmes, digital initiatives, MOOCs, NSRCEL, life as an academician and perspectives to teaching and learning – all in a very interactive format”.

-Allen P. Ugargol, Associate Professor of Practice, Public Policy, IIMB

“Attending the New Faculty Orientation Workshop (NFOW) was a marvellous experience for me. It is a commendable initiative taken by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB). The team led by Prof. Sourav Mukherji provided us valuable advice about viable approaches to teaching and research. The practical case-based learning method to demonstrate classroom discussion techniques was beneficial to all new faculty members. Further, the program sessions facilitated us in understanding the administrative system at the institute. More importantly, it allowed me to connect and interact with other faculty colleagues on the online platform amid the pandemic. Overall, I found NFOW quite helpful and would recommend all future colleagues to attend.”

-Debojyoti Das, Assistant Professor, Finance & Control, IIMB

I attended the New Faculty Orientation Workshop for new faculty at IIMB within few months of my joining, though I was a lateral hire with more than 30 years of experience in industry and academics before joining IIMB. The workshop gave an excellent overview of IIMB history, culture, vision, mission and changing priorities. The focus on research, stakeholder involvement, innovation and entrepreneurship were highlighted. It was an amazing refresher on teaching and learning; though I have been a trainer and facilitator for 3 decades. Sessions by experienced and seasoned teachers along with few tips on how use different teaching tools and methods for being an effective teacher helped immensely. Same can be said for use of case method and tips of preparing before the case and during the class discussion. The workshop also informed participants of diversity and inclusion and how to take care of the various sections of students including the differently abled ones. The workshop also created a link among the new faculty and created a new linkage with many senior professors from various areas. I am grateful to Prof Sourav Mukherji and Prof R Srinivasan for their course direction. Overall, it was an excellent opportunity to learn and relearn few significant and practical tips for being an effective teacher and researcher for this premier institute. It’s an excellent initiative indeed towards becoming a world-class institution.

-Gopal Mahapatra, Professor of Practice, Organizational Behaviour & HRM, IIMB

“The New Faculty Orientation Workshop (NFOW) has personally been a great learning and enriching experience for me. The workshop, which was primarily intended for new faculty members of the institute, covered varied topics, including the drivers of learning, case teaching philosophy, case writing, and course design, to name a few. The primary focus of the workshop was to make the participants understand about what does it take to not only impart learning but also make it stick and how a teacher can be instrumental in achieving this outcome inside as well as outside the classroom. It gave me a new perspective to teaching, which I am sure to bring to the classroom for effective engagement with my students. In addition, the workshop was also helpful in knowing the institute and its programmes in more depth and how an academic can achieve work-life balance. Even though the workshop was delivered in the online mode this year owing to the restrictions on gatherings due to COVID-19, I found it to be highly effective and especially beneficial to those who are new to teaching in a business school.”

-Varun Jindal, Assistant Professor, Finance & Accounting, IIMB

“While there is massive emphasis on research in quantitative areas, the formal coursework, somewhere, falls short of imparting the right pedagogies required for B-school teaching. This often becomes a hurdle for the students as they enter the job market.

The three-day workshop was an information-dense introduction to applied teaching, including case-based teaching, interactive teaching and flipped classrooms. The workshop provided me with the opportunity to receive feedback on my teaching skills, case development skills and teaching plan from experts like Prof. Pereira and Prof. Mukherji, a rare and extremely valuable experience.

I am full of ideas and excitement and I can hardly wait to enter a classroom. I think all doctoral students should go through an intensive workshop like this to ensure they are on the right path towards becoming a great teacher.”
