Research Spotlight

Fiscal and monetary policies are key levers of economic management. How does their interplay influence inequality and income distribution? Doctoral student Kunal Biswas, Economics area, examines how policy coordination impacts macroeconomic stability and consumption inequality. Using a novel empirical measure and a DSGE framework calibrated to India, his research reveals how expansionary shocks redistribute consumption across households, offering insights into the nuanced trade-offs in economic policy design.

Can financial inclusion increase the intra-household bargaining power of women in India? Shivali Sharma’s thesis delves into how these factors drive structural transformation and overall development. From a policy perspective, understanding the interplay between financial inclusion and market access is crucial as it could inform strategies that enhance economic resilience, promote inclusive growth, and foster sustainable development.

I am a doctoral student in the Economics area. My research interests lie at the intersection of behavioural and development economics, with a special focus on education outcomes. I am currently working on how civil conflicts affect education outcomes and how post-conflict reconciliatory pogrammes can address the negative impacts of conflict

Economic activity is unevenly distributed across regions and across variables such as income, output, growth, and unemployment. Yet policy often takes a one-size-fits-all approach. To that end, how does location influence industrial growth, trade, and inequality?

Doctoral scholar Vivek Kandimalla, Economics area, narrows his focus to India’s manufacturing sector through spatial economics, studying how industrial policies impact regional welfare and how trade barriers drive inefficiencies.

Research Overview

Chairperson of the Economics area Prof. Manaswini Bhalla describes the rigor of the courses, the wide range of electives and the opportunity to publish in top journals for PhD scholars at IIMB.

PhD scholar Banantika Datta’s thesis involves the nexus of trade and migration to address emerging issues such as services trade, free trade agreements, and the mobility of professionals -- specifically health workers.

Satarupa Mitra, a final year PhD scholar, uses experimental methods to investigate risk preferences, exponential growth bias in predicting COVID cases, corrupt behaviour, and mental health of adolescent students.

I study the decision to invest in human capital. I take the case of organisations and propose a flexible approach to measure the inefficiency in one of the human capital assets of an organization, which is its management

I am Muneer Kalliyil. My research interests include the Economics of Education and Development Economics in general. My current research investigates some crucial and topical issues in education economics. Currently, I am working on various factors affecting the establishment and positioning of new private schools in India. Through this project, I am trying to answer various questions such as how the private schooling market responds to existing government schools and private schools, and whether the timing of private school entry is linked to that of big infrastructure development projects
