Inclusive Growth & Profits with Purpose mark IMRA-IIMB Conference

Eminent speakers dwell on sustainable developmental goals and the importance of partnerships in building successful business models

DECEMBER 16, 2015: The 2015 IMRA-IIMB International Conference, titled ‘Inclusive Growth & Profits with Purpose: New Management Paradigm’, hosted by IIM Bangalore (IIMB), was inaugurated on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. The conference is being organized by the International Management Research Academy (IMRA), London, UK in collaboration with IIMB and will be held till Friday, December 18, 2015.

The IMRA is a global academy dedicated to the continuous and effective development of management theory and practice by fostering collaborative relationships between academics and practitioners.

IIMB Faculty member Dr. Jayadev M set the tone for the meet by talking about the theme of the conference, explaining IIMB’s part in it and introducing the speakers. He said that inclusive growth was essential for developing economies, while profit with purpose was relevant for developed ones. “These elements are also relevant in the context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability and they need to be balanced,” he said, adding that IIMB was the right forum for such a meet, being a distinguished business school in the South Asian/Central Asian region and having won several awards. “The institute is aiming to make a mark as a research based institute, apart from being ranked among the top teaching based ones. To that end, the institute has been holding several conferences resulting to publications, faculty/students have been coming from different parts of the world, the international intake in all aspects is rising – all this will help IIMB gain recognition in management research. The IMRA-IIMB conference is another step in that direction,” he explained.

He went on to state that the conference had received an overwhelming response: there were more than 800 submissions; 526 were asked to review, revise and submit; 64 competitive papers were finally received; 42 papers were selected for the presentation sessions; 11 papers have been considered for case study. “Moreover, there is significant participation of 27 masters and doctoral students from around the world. There is a book presentation also. We also have collaboration with the IIMB Management Review, which is considered as a B-category journal according to the Australian Business School Deans’ rating,” said Dr Jayadev, pointing out that the conference was expected to result in significant academic output.

Dr. Michael Chattalas, Academic Program Coordinator for Marketing, Kean University, hoped the conference would contribute unique insights on how to overcome national stereotypes and negative images in marketing, advertising and social media. Offering a brief overview of IMRA’s activities and reach, he said the global academy had over 800 members representing 50 nations and integrated the best industry benchmarks with academic research. “Bringing academics, practitioners and students of management together is the vision of IMRA.”

This was followed by a formal inauguration and lighting of the lamp.

The first session of the three-day collaborative conference had two key speakers: Dr. Saras Sarasvathy, Professor of Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Ethics at Darden and Visiting Faculty at IIMB and S. Sivakumar, Divisional Chief Executive, Agri Business Division, ITC, Chairman of Technico Agri Sciences Limited, and Vice Chairman of ITC Infotech India Limited and its subsidiaries in the UK and USA.

IIMB faculty member PD Jose introduced S. Sivakumar, who offered his perspective of the new paradigm of management. “The new paradigm should not be confused with CSR. We need to create a reciprocal dependency between what is good for the society and what is good for the business, which then creates a virtuous cycle,” he said.

He suggested that businesses learnt to deal with long-term risks, produce more in a sustainable manner, and employ collective efforts or partnerships to achieve the same. “Knowledge should be translated into better quality life,” he added.

Dr Saras Sarasvathy, Professor Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Darden and Visiting Faculty at IIMB, engaged the audience in a conversation on lessons that entrepreneurs learn. “Most companies do not start with a brilliant idea or a big market opportunity; the future is fundamentally unpredictable, so don’t try to predict it. To make good decisions, try to work with things that are already in your control, like time, skills, peer group, etc. Entrepreneurship is about who am I, what do I know, whom do I know and what kinds of things can I do that will be of value to someone else. These are fundamentals of business. You should invest what you can afford to lose, then build the venture. Affordable loss keeps investment low and it forces you to be resource creative,” she said.

Referring to the concept of inclusive growth, she termed co-creation as “vital”, adding that in the process of co-creation, everyone learned together.

The 2015 IMRA-IIMB International Conference will also include a half-day seminar on ‘Challenges in Building Sustainable Agri-Food Supply Chains in India’, hosted by IIM Bangalore and Hull University Business School (HUBS), UK, on Friday, December 18, 2015, from 9.20 am to 1.00 pm, at the IIMB campus. The seminar will facilitate developing a network and a knowledge-base for sharing and exchanging expertise between the UK and India in the creation of sustainable agricultural supply chains in India.
