22 February, 2019, Bengaluru: From tracing the evolution of the retail industry to learning how to leverage analytics for retail supply chain success, lively discussions marked the one-day academia-meets-industry conference, hosted by the Supply Chain Management Centre (SCMC), at IIM Bangalore, here today.
IIMB Director Prof. G. Raghuram inaugurated the conference and SCMC Chair, Prof. Amar Sapra, welcomed the delegates.
Designed for industry executives in retail, supply chain management, information technology and consulting organizations, the conference also saw enthusiastic participation from researchers and students focused on the retail industry.
In his keynote address, Prof Ashis Mishra, faculty from the Marketing area at IIMB, discussed the evolution of the retail industry from levels 1.0 to 4.0 and emphasised the difference between omni-channel and multi-channel retail. Sanjeev Siotia, Senior Vice President & CTO, Manhattan Associates, presented the role of emerging technologies and application of AI, IoT, block chain, and machine learning in the retail sector.
The first panel, that deliberated on delivering a seamless customer experience with omni-channel retail, was moderated by Prof. Prithwiraj Mukherjee, from the Marketing area at IIMB, and featured Shilpadhar Barkam, Head, Customer Returns & Reverse Logistics, Amazon India, Anu Narasimhan, a retail industry researcher, experienced in Strategy & Marketing at HUL & Britannia, and Sanjeev Siotia, Senior VP & CTO, Manhattan Associates.
Prof. U. Dinesh Kumar, faculty from the Decision Sciences area at IIMB, in his talk on ‘Leveraging analytics for retail supply chain success’, highlighted the importance of data reliability for effective outcomes.
The second panel, which dealt with challenges in the retail sector, calling for a paradigm shift and an agile supply chain, was moderated by Prof. Jishnu Hazra, faculty from the Production & Operations Management area at IIMB, and featured Dipayan Baishya, CEO, Futures Group, K B Nagaraju, Director, BigBasket, Kavitha Krishnarao, Business leader, IKEA, and J Murali, Head, Supply Chain & Merchandizing, Titan Company.
Jeff Demenkow, Vice President, Professional Services Organization, Manhattan Associates, deliberated on the back-room activity required to support customer expectations and supply chain challenges in the retail sector.
The session on e-commerce impacting the fulfilment strategy in the retail sector by Prof. Seema Gupta, faculty from the Marketing area at IIMB, discussed the nuances of B2B and B2C in the retail sector.
The fireside chat, between V S Sudhakar Co-Founder, BigBasket, and Prof. G Shainesh, faculty from the Marketing area at IIMB,
drew a lot of interest as it was on how to effectively approach the convergence of offline and online retail.
Dr D N Suresh, from SCMC, summarized the day’s proceedings and assured the audience that the Supply Chain Management Centre at IIMB would continue to catalyse dialogues between academia and industry practitioners.
