IIMB’s Centre for Teaching and Learning hosts online panel discussion on ‘Performing Arts Integrated Learning’ on June 24

15 July, 2022, Bengaluru: The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at IIM Bangalore hosted an online panel discussion on: ‘Performing Arts Integrated Learning’ on June 24 (Friday), 2022, as part of its Samiksha series of webinars.

Prof. Chetan Subramanian, Dean, Faculty (faculty: Economics & Social Sciences area), introduced the guests and set the context of the discussion. The discussants were Geeta Dharmarajan, writer, editor, social entrepreneur and the Founder & President of Katha, a non-profit organization that she founded in 1988; Prof. Kaustuv Roy, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, and Prof. Sreelata Jonnalagedda, Chairperson and faculty of the Marketing area of IIM Bangalore.

Geeta Dharmarajan in her talk spoke about the magical bond that gets created when the elements of performing arts are integrated into mainstream pedagogic practices, resulting in an engaging and participatory classroom.

Prof. Kaustuv presented a broader approach and axioms of performativity, and highlighted that existence or life makes sense largely when we look at it as a continuous performance. “Since performance is happening all the time, learning from these should not remain confined to classroom practices”, he added.

Prof. Sreelata Jonnalagedda discussed the WHY, WHAT and HOW of performing arts integrated learning, that is, why performing arts should be integrated into learning, what aspects and kinds of performing arts could be used in learning environments, and how/the ways to do so.

Lopamudra Dewan, Associate Manager, Centre for Teaching and Learning, who moderated the panel discussion, summed up the session as one which provided the right blend of inputs on theory, practice and vision related to Performing Arts Integrated Learning.
