IIMB launches Sustainability Dashboard to mark World Environment Day
05 JUNE, 2024: To mark World Environment Day, the IIMB Director, Prof. Rishikesha T Krishnan, and Prof. Haritha Saranga, Chairperson, Sustainability Task Force at IIMB, along with IIMB faculty Prof. Rajendra K Bandi, Prof. M Jayadev, Prof. Mukta Kulkarni and Prof. G Shainesh launched the IIMB Sustainability Dashboard, this morning, on campus.
The Dashboard tracks energy sources and consumption, CO2 emission and offset, and waste – generated, recycled and repurposed, on campus. It also tracks water consumption trends and biodiversity on campus.
In her address, Prof. Haritha Saranga, Chairperson, Sustainability Task Force at IIMB, spoke of the climate crisis, drew attention to the unprecedented heat and rain in Bangalore over the last few months – a direct result of climate change, and encouraged everyone – faculty, students and staff, to contribute, in their own way, to mitigate the crisis. “IIMB has the opportunity and the ability to be a role model for other institutions,” she said.
Listing the sustainable measures and green initiatives adopted by IIMB such as harvesting rainwater, using rooftop solar energy, reducing its carbon footprint by using renewable energy, recharging wells on campus, segregating waste, and recycling and upcycling waste, she offered a glimpse into several new activities lined up for the next few months such as a Book ReUse program, and a Cloth Collection and Recycling drive.
IIMB Director Prof. Rishikesha T Krishnan appreciated the efforts of the IIMB community towards making the campus more sustainability and paid tribute to the legacy of the founders of the Institute. “We are now looking at how we can make the energy that we consume more greener,” he said, adding that when IIMB students carry these initiatives with them into the organizations which they join, the impact is sure to be great.
Children as champions of change
On World Environment Day, IIMB launches its Sustainability dashboard.
Also, on display at the launch on campus, was a series of paintings by Grade VI and Grade VIII students of Samhita Academy who attended two workshops on Sustainability at IIMB and presented their ideas on energy saving in the form of these beautiful paintings. “The best part of the exercise was that we see a 10 per cent reduction in their household electricity consumption,” said Prof. Haritha Saranga, emphasizing the powerful role that children can play in bringing about change.
