‘Skill development and vocational training should promote inclusion’: Prakash Belawadi during Prayaas Day 2017
The event hosted by the social initiative wing of IIMB’s EPGP was themed around promoting social inclusion and witnessed participation from the transgender community and children from Surabhi Advaya Foundation
05 February 2017, Bengaluru: In his keynote address on Prayaas Day 2017, celebrated at IIMB on 5th February (Sunday) 2017, Prakash Belawadi, activist and a journalist and co-founder of the Centre for Film and Drama, Bangalore, urged people from the transgender community to form a skill development and vocational training centre.
Prayaas, hosted by the social initiative wing of IIM Bangalore’s Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP), was themed around social inclusion, and saw enthusiastic participation by members of the transgender community represented by PAYANA Foundation and children from Surabhi Advaya Foundation.
Earlier in the day, while inaugurating the event at the IIMB auditorium, EPGP Chairperson Prof. U Dinesh Kumar said, “The event aims to address social inequalities and make us think about what can be done to bridge the gap.”
This year’s Prayaas Day comprised an eye camp, sessions aimed at generating awareness on the transgender community - their challenges and achievements, as well as fun group activities, which saw participants from PAYANA and Surabhi Advaya Foundation come together to make two- to three-minute joint presentations on problems that they thought were rampant, which they addressed creatively in the form of either a poster, a skit or a dance performance.
The event also involved the sharing of life experiences. The other highlights included a story-telling session by Jyothi Rao from Kathalaya (an organization promoting storytelling and related activities) and a movie screening, which was followed by an energetic dance performance by EPGP students.
