Conference on Spirituality & Management gets underway

Three-day meet has talks and paper submissions on themes relating to Sustainability, Good Governance & Spiritual Transformation

JANUARY 04, 2016: The International Conference on Spirituality and Management, titled Indigenous Models of Sustainability, Good Governance and Spiritual Transformation, commenced at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) campus on Monday, January 4, 2016. The conference, which aims to explore the interface between spirituality and management, is being organized in collaboration with the Vedic Foundations of Indian Management (VFIM), New Delhi and supported by several institutions.

The three-day conference will see paper submissions from practitioners, academicians, doctoral students and practicing managers, focussing on themes relating to Sustainability, Good Governance and Spiritual Transformation, among others.

In his opening remarks, Dr Ramnath Narayanswamy, Conference Director and Professor in the Economics & Social Sciences area, IIMB, highlighted the relevance of studying the relation between management and spirituality. “In today’s world, which is torn by turbulence and strife, mass prayer can reinstate harmony and restore equilibrium. Thought, word and deed must be in harmony. We also need to care for the earth that is sustaining us,” he said. Thinking aloud whether the creative power of people could be unleashed in a positive manner that could help transform the country, he said a set of 25 papers would be chosen for a volume on spirituality and management that could be used by interested management schools.

Conference Co-Director Professor Sunita Singh Sengupta, VFIM, said: “The conference is a research-based management education initiative, where we are trying to go back to our roots, and imbibe traditional business models.”  Dr J L Raina, Chairman, VFIM , pointed out that the ‘back to basics’ approach had regained relevance. “We need to imbibe values and reconnect with our past.”

In his keynote address, AP Durai, of the Sahaj Marg Spirituality Foundation, spoke about ‘The importance of meditation in the modern world’. “Spiritual traditions and systems show us that God is within. That is what spiritual masters teach us. They guide us to think for ourselves. Although meditation is not an easy route, it makes us become responsible for ourselves; it is a route to self-development and self-improvement. Govern yourself, regulate your thoughts and conduct, build your character and be a sustainable model for others,” he said.

On Day 1 and Day 2, the conference will cover topics such as Workplace Spirituality, Spirituality and Management, Good Governance, Spirituality and Leadership, Benefits of the Vedic Way of Life, Ethics and Sustainable Banking in Spirituality, Spirituality and Entrepreneurship, Sustainable Development, and Developing Meditating Power.

Mohandas Pai, CEO, Manipal Global Education Services, will deliver the keynote address on ‘The Case for Sustainability, Good Governance and Spirituality’ on Day 3 (Jan 6). Session 1 on Day 3 will focus on 'Inner Development' ; Session 2 on ‘Guru-Shishya Parampara’; Session 3 on 'Interfaith Perspectives' and Session 4 on 'Insights on Sustainability'.

Parallel tracks will be held to accommodate all the papers.

Day 3 will wrap up with a talk by Ashwin Mahesh, technologist, urbanist, journalist and scientist, on ‘The Meaning of Good Governance’, and the valedictory and presentation of awards by Dr J L Raina.

There will be three categories of awards, including the Nancy Raina Best Research Paper Award for INR 5,000 on behalf of VFIM; the Best Doctoral Paper Award for INR 10,000 on behalf on IIM Bangalore; and the Most Innovative Paper Award for INR 10,000 on behalf of IIM Bangalore.

All the participants will receive a certificate of attendance and participation.
