‘PGPPM meshes management and public policy effectively’

It has positioned IIMB's Centre for Public Policy as a policy think tank, says Professor Gopal Naik, welcoming the programme's 13th batch
"The Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy Management (PGPPM) focuses on developing management disciplines for better efficiency in Government," said Professor Gopal Naik while highlighting the 'Institutional History of PGPPM', at the inauguration of the 13th batch of the one-year PGPPM at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore on May 19 (Monday).
The course focuses on accentuating the participants' knowledge of governance. "The course, through the years, has been revamped significantly as the laws of negotiations changed, governance thinking was reformed, and better practices were adopted and inculcated by Governments."
Professor Naik said the course's core strengths lie in helping the participants' develop international perspectives, conceptual understanding and skill management. "The idea is to move towards data-based decision making to build best practice policies. The course therefore provides conceptual, technical and analytical skills in public policy making," he added.
Mr. Laisram Angam Chand Singh (IAAS), Principal Accountant General, Sikkim and PGPPM alumnus, spoke on 'Understanding Public Policy: Insights from Policy Makers'. "The programme offers both theoretical and practical knowledge. The participants' vast experience makes it all the more effective. It helps us, as PGPPM participants, tackle new challenges in the context of liberalization, globalization and rapid technology change and in environment which has the continuing burden of poverty, social exclusion and crises," he said.
Sharing anecdotes from his work-life in Sikkim, he added: "My networking skills improved. By introducing simple policies, based on management concepts, I could bring about a difference in the white-collared corridors."
Earlier in the day, Professor Devanath Tirupati, Director In-charge and Dean Academic, IIMB, said: "The PGPPM, offered by IIMB, is a unique programme, where professionals from Government and Non-Government sector come together and engage in a manner that is mutually beneficial. It helps the participants appreciate the forces that shape the domestic and international environment for public policy. This time, the course will focus on issues related to ethics, which is now the cornerstone of any responsible business."
Professor Rajalaxmi Kamath, Chairperson, PGPPM, welcomed the programme participants to IIMB and said: "At the end of one year, you will bring about reforms in policy formulation, implementation and evaluation with international and Indian agencies as well as consultancy organizations. The managerial base, provided by the programme, will give you the extra edge and equip you with conceptual knowledge required to take data-based decisions."
