20 students from Myanmar are at IIMB to hone their management skills
Twenty students from the University of Mandalay in Myanmar are being hosted by the Centre for Public Policy at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, from November 18 to November 29, 2013.
They have come all the way from Mandalay to the IT capital to take back some new ideas on doing business. Their training includes pedagogy relating to various aspects of entrepreneurship, management of small and medium enterprises, sustaining and expanding the financial and human resources of an enterprise, both in the national and in the global context.
The visit, which for many will be their first to the country, will be packed with lectures and field tours to Narayana Hrudayalaya, Safal, Akshaya Patra Foundation etc.
While some of the students are working in firms of different sizes, some among them also own businesses. Through the program, the Centre for Public Policy hopes to expose the students to various aspects of doing business domestically in a given economy and more relevantly, in the international context.
"Now that Myanmar government has injected a new vigour into the process of opening up its internal economy, the opportunities are immense. The students wish to get an idea of our business environment which has a significant international content. A comprehensive programme of pedagogy, visits to enterprises and meetings with has been finalized," said N. Ravi, former diplomat and Senior Fellow, Centre for Public Policy at IIMB.
Genesis of the programme
Over the past three years, a number of delegations from ASEAN countries have visited the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore.
In November, 2011 a delegation of Ambassadors of ASEAN countries based in New Delhi visited IIMB, followed by a visit in February 2012 by the delegation comprising the Permanent Representatives of ASEAN countries based in Jakarta, in turn followed by a delegation headed by the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam accompanied by the Minister for Education and Training in March 2012.
In the discussions held during these visits by the Director of IIMB and the Chairpersons of various centres and programmes at IIMB, extension of cooperation and assistance in training was the central theme. Similarly suggestions for training civil servants and MBA students were the themes that were discussed during these visits.
The first batch of 20 MBA students from the University of Mandalay in Myanmar attended a training workshop organized by the Centre for Public Policy, titled 'The India Experience', at IIMB from October 28 to November 7, 2012.
The second batch's training, from November 18-29, 2013 at IIMB, assumes greater significance coming as it does in the year when Myanmar is hosting the ASEAN Summit in 2014. It is hoped that the program, a culmination of efforts initiated by IIM Bangalore, would yield a greater frequency and gradual increase in intensity of interactions between other ASEAN countries and India in general, and in the field of entrepreneurship, training and pedagogy at IIM Bangalore, in particular.
