Milestone moment for premier B-School

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore turned 40 on October 28, 2013 - an interesting age for human beings and institutions alike.

Milestone moment for premier B-School

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore is in the midst of a journey to become a globally recognized school for excellence in management education.  While the transformation is still in process and not yet complete, the initial results of the efforts are there for all to see.

For the sixth consecutive year, IIMB has been ranked the Best Business School in Central Asia by Eduniversal, Paris.   The award was given to the Institute at the 6th Eduniversal World Convention, which was hosted on campus during October 9-12, 2013. The convention brought together deans, business educators, academics and professionals in the field of Education.

IIMB, in partnership with University of North Carolina, has received the prestigious Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative award. This initiative is aimed at strengthening the collaboration and building partnerships between American and Indian institutions of higher education in priority fields.   As part of this Initiative, Professor P. D. Jose and his team at IIMB will collaborate with the team at UNC on the project 'Partnering for Success: Advancing Sustainability Research and Education in India'.

IIMB obtained the EQUIS re-accreditation awarded by the European Foundation for Management Education (EFMD).

In partnership with Earthwatch Institute, IIMB is initiating Fellowships for its students to pursue summer internships in areas related to sustainability and environments.  The Institute has already found support for this initiative from some corporations and expects the initiative will grow in the future.

Prayas and Vikasana, the two student groups on campus with focus on social service have come up with new initiatives this year to expand the scope and range of their activities.  For example, Vikasana organized a series of events as part of the Joy of Giving Week to increase awareness about the need for and to encourage individuals' contributions to society.

'One day @IIMB' is a unique event which gave an opportunity to the people outside IIMB to experience a typical day on campus with the resident students. The select group got a chance to attend classroom lectures by IIMB faculty and participate in interactive sessions with the IIMB alumni.  Vikasana has collected Rs.1.90 lakh from activities organized during the Joy of Giving Week.  This amount has been contributed to partner NGOs.

Presenting the progress report of the Institute, Professor Devanath Tirupati, Director In-charge, IIMB, said: "The Foundation Day is about celebration of the Institute and the people behind it.  This includes recognition of faculty and staff who tirelessly work to further the mission of the Institute, which is to impart transformative and holistic education.  This occasion is also used to recognize alumni for their accomplishments and for being ambassadors of the Institute."

Delivering the Foundation Day lecture, Professor U R Ananthamurthy, Jnanpith and Padma Bhushan awardee and Chancellor of the Central University of Karnataka, exhorted institutes of learning and excellence to redefine the concept of intelligence. "Change the criteria for "arhatha". Don't give up on it but redefine it."

He quoted extensively from his experience at Heggodu, where the eminent playwright K V Subbanna has set up a theatre institute, to show that excellence can be created only through equality.

"For one year, youngsters with an SSLC pass or a PUC pass stay at Heggodu and learn theatre. They hail from the most backward regions. They are Siddhis, tribals and dalits. And they put together marvelous plays that wow the world audience. Unless India opens up to such experiments, we cannot create equality or excellence, nor can we win Nobel prizes," he remarked.

Listing the "three hungers" vital to mankind - hunger for equality, hunger for spirituality and hunger for modernity, Professor Ananthamurthy dwelt on the notion of development. "We must develop a critique of development if we want any original thought," he declared, reiterating that "sarvodaya not development holds the key to contentment" or what he termed as 'nemmadi'.

From Shakespeare to Blake, he quoted extensively, celebrating naivete ("It is only the naïve who get original thoughts because their minds are not full of opinions!") and native intelligence. "Let us free ourselves from the manacles imposed by politics, economics and university disciplines," he said, wondering aloud why stories of woe and pain, like those pitiful cries of the young chimney sweeps in industrialised Britain of the 1700s, tend to be swept away, even in the 2ist century, in the desperate bid while defining and describing development. "Let us ask ourselves: 'Development at what price'?" he said.

The lecture was followed by a spirited Question & Answer session, after which the Long Service Awards were given to staff members of IIMB.

The next segment was the Distinguished Alumni Awards. Introducing this year's Distinguished Alumni Award winner, Malavika Harita, CEO, Saatchi & Saatchi Focus Networks, India, Dean (Administration) Professor S Raghunath said: "For the first time since 2007, IIMB is awarding a woman alumna. We wish Malavika Harita (PGP '82) who has immensely contributed to society every success."

Dr Mangala Rai, Senior Member of Board of Governors of IIMB and President, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, chaired the programme. He said, "A good mind and hard work will never lead to failure in any field". He thanked Professor Ananthamurthy for an enlightening and stimulating lecture to mark the milestone Foundation Day.
