CTL hosts Nurturing Future Leadership Program
The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at IIMB hosted the Nurturing Future Leadership Program from March 25 to 29, under the aegis of Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.
In all, 35 participants, who were nominated by 24 centrally funded institutes across India, attended the program. The nominating institutes include IITs (Jammu, Delhi, Roorkee, Bhubaneshwar and Kharagpur), IIMs (Bodh Gaya, Sirmaur and Vishakhapatnam), IISERs (Mohali, Berhampur, Bhopal and Thiruvananthapuram), NITs (Trichy, Calicut, Uttarakhand and Agartala), IIIT Allahabad, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University, University of Allahabad, Mahatma Gandhi Central University (Motihari), Central Universities of Haryana, Kashmir, and Odisha.
The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Rishikesha Krishnan, Director, IIM Bangalore, and Prof. Sushanta Mishra, Chairperson, CTL. Prof. Mishra delivered the Welcome Address, where he presented a comprehensive overview of the different facets of IIM Bangalore along with the program overview.
Following this, Prof. Krishnan delivered the Keynote Address on ‘Academic Leadership’. He urged participants to work towards finding ways to implement their research in practice, thereby making their expertise/knowledge accessible to the broader community.
The programme featured an array of insightful sessions and a panel discussion focused on topics relevant to thought leadership. The sessions were led by senior faculty members of IIM Bangalore, along with a few industry experts. The details of the sessions conducted during the programme are provided below:

Prof. Ganesh Prabhu, Area Chairperson, Strategy, led a session on ‘Participant-centric Learning’. Prof. Prabhu strategically drew references from the Greco-Persian war to create problem statements and involve the participants in group discussions. He recommended case-based teaching as an effective way of fostering active participation in the classroom.

Prof. B Mahadevan, faculty of Production & Operations Management Area, offered a perceptive take on work-life balance through his session on ‘Stress & Well-Being’. Leveraging traditional Indian knowledge systems, such as ‘Āyurveda’ and ‘shlokas’ from Bhagavad Gītā and the Upanishads, Prof. Mahadevan steered his talk towards a deeper exploration of the mind and its activities. He particularly stressed on the philosophy of yoga and the impact of meditation in regulating stress and facilitating overall well-being.

Prof. Gopal Mahapatra, Professor of Practice, Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Management (OB & HRM), led a lively discussion on ‘Understanding Self & Visioning’. The session comprised simple exercises for the participants to envision their personal/professional goals and create a roadmap to realise their aspirations. Prof. Mahapatra highlighted the importance of learning agility for leaders and educators to cope with the constantly evolving landscape of the world.

Rakesh Godhwani, Adjunct Faculty in the Business Communication area at IIM Bangalore and the Chairman, School of Meaningful Experiences (SoME), touched upon another relevant aspect of leadership through his session on ‘Communication for Academic Leaders’. Godhwani’s way of inducing responses from his audience epitomized the purpose of the session. He encouraged the participants to reinvent pedagogies—storytelling, gamification, immersive tools, movie references, etc.—or figure out ways to make teaching effective for the current generation of students.

Prof. Shankar Venkatagiri, Area Chairperson, Information Systems led a session on ‘Negotiation and Conflict Management’, where he engaged the participants in an intensive exercise to give them a hands-on experience of applying their negotiation skills. He also threw light on some power negotiating tactics to help them reach a conscious and wise agreement.

Nitesh Batra, Certified Compassion Cultivation Trainer & Mindfulness Teacher, brought in a thoughtful perspective through his session on ‘Mind and Meditation’. The spiritually driven session was composed of a few sets of meditative exercises and an insightful presentation of the fundamental functions of the mind: Buddhi, Manas, Ahankara, and Chitta.

CTL’s Chairperson and faculty of OB & HRM area, Prof. Sushanta Mishra, delivered a well-crafted session on ‘Emotional Intelligence & Resilience’, which involved the use of two case studies. The case discussions saw active participation from the audience on relevant aspects such as decision-making, people management, collaboration, team building, and so on. Prof. Mishra also cited real-life examples of resilience and persistence, prompting the participants to align their goals to a purpose while tackling challenges.

Prof. Vasanthi Srinivasan, faculty of OB & HRM Area, added the finishing touch to the programme through an invigorating session on ‘Driving People and Performance’. When it comes to leadership, Prof. Srinivasan emphasized the importance of holding accountability to one’s institution. She recommended breaking down goals into phases—short- and long-term—to not only take stock of progress but also gauge the effectiveness.
Besides the aforementioned sessions, the programme also facilitated a panel discussion on “Managing Stakeholders” led by faculty members of IIM Bangalore who are currently Heading important departments and projects at IIMB. The panellists for the discussion were Prof. Gopal Naik, Chairperson, Jal Jeevan Mission, Prof. M Jayadev, Dean, Administration, and Prof. Sourav Mukherji, Dean, Alumni Relations & Development. Prof. Sushanta Mishra, Chairperson, CTL moderated the discussion. The panel addressed some common challenges faced by academicians, such as time optimization, work-life balance, managing negativity, and decision-making.
Prof. Sushanta Mishra also interacted with the participants to gather feedback on the sessions and the overall programme, while addressing relevant queries raised by the participants. The NFL programme concluded with a valediction ceremony, along with closing remarks by Prof. Mishra.
