IIMB doctoral students’ research initiatives get fillip from Wipro Sustainability Fellowship & Sustainability Grant

Funding from Wipro to boost IIMB students’ research on sustainability

01 JULY, 2017, Bengaluru: FPM students Anirban Adhikary and Vivek, who were the recipients of the Sustainability Fellowship and the Sustainability Grant respectively, initiated by Wipro, in January 2016, have received a renewal of the fellowship and the grant for a further period of one year until December 2017.

The research process of both Anirban and Vivek is ongoing, and they have been presenting their research findings in various conferences. In addition to the renewals of the fellowship and grant for Anirban and Vivek, the Sustainability Fellowship for 2017 was awarded to Anupama Lakshmanan for a period of one year.

The Wipro Sustainability Fellowship and Sustainability Grant began in January 2016 as part of Wipro Limited’s efforts to spur research in the area of sustainability. Students of the doctoral programme at IIM Bangalore – the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), regardless of their specialization, are eligible to apply, provided their research interests fall within the broad area of sustainability.

The fellowship is for students who are in the fourth or the fifth year of the FPM. The fellowship pays a stipend and may be renewed till the completion of the dissertation or a further period of one year, whichever is earlier, based on the student's continued good performance. The grant pays an annual sum which can be used for contingency expenses towards the applicant’s research in sustainability issues, and is also renewable till completion of the dissertation or a further period of one year, whichever is earlier.

Anirban’s research focuses on supply chain management issues related to improving the environmental performance of suppliers. This assumes importance as majority of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions occur at the supplier’s end of the supply chain. To assess the overall environmental performance of a network, Anirban takes a multi-tier network perspective. He views the buyer-supplier relationship as a complex network rather than being conventional linear, dyadic or triadic structures. Utilizing this network perspective, Anirban has empirically tested the impact of the supply network structure on network level environmental performance. He believes that his research will help practitioners design and govern supply networks to diffuse sustainable practices efficiently and reduce the carbon footprint of the overall supply chain network.

Vivek’s work focuses on policy interventions towards water conservation in urban residences. Many cities around the world are facing increasing water scarcity exposing the sustainability of prevalent practices in water management. Rapid urbanization and rise in economic prosperity are increasing the demand for water and policymakers are frequently considering use of various interventions as policy tools towards water conservation. Vivek’s study adds to the discourse on water conservation policy in cities through the use of new settings and experiments by providing insights into the underlying factors behind water conservation. In these experiments, price and non-price responses are compared and analyzed and coupled with data on households, to obtain insights that can better inform water management policy in cities. Vivek believes that his research would help policymakers at various levels devise policies to manage water more sustainably in cities.

This year’s DML awardees for FPM:
