IIMB hosts panel discussion on Self-Development: East-West Synthesis

10 June, 2017, Bengaluru: Saturday’s Musings, the monthly event organized by IIM Bangalore’s Alumni Office, saw yet another interesting discussion, this time on self-development. Hosted by IIMB’s Alumni office, experts, faculty members and alumni gathered together to share their learnings on the self-development process.

The event was segregated into two sessions. The first session was led by Prof. C. Manohar Reddy, Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at IIMB, who briefed the audience on the concept of self-development. Beginning with a heartfelt prayer, he went on to explain how he began his journey of self-development, which is still ongoing. His journey began with his keenness to gain a deeper insight into himself.

An industrial engineer turned human resources observer, Prof. Manohar traced his journey from the time he set out to pursue a course in People Management from IIM Ahmedabad. He went on to list out the challenges he faced in his quest for self-development. Of all the challenges faced, the most crucial one, he said, was the lack in change of behavior. He realized that no amount of books and self-development sessions sustain change in behavior over time. Intent on finding out why, he began his research into eastern and western approaches to self-development. Years of studying the two approaches individually made him come to the assumption that a combination of both the western and Indian approaches is far superior than individual approaches and can come a long way in sustaining change in behavior.

“The way we think, the way we feel and the way we behave is a consequence of the recordings of all our past experiences that reside in our brain and our five senses. If we can modify the recording of our past experiences, then we can think, feel and behave differently. This will help us to overcome our fears and sustain change in behavior,” he explained.

The second session focused on a panel discussion that was moderated by Prof. C. Manohar Reddy. The panelists comprised Anuradha Narasimhan, marketing professional and IIMB alumna (Class of 1992), Sanjay Dutt, leadership coach and IIMB alumnus (Class of 1993) and Jai Narayan, communications and soft skills expert. The discussion revolved around each of the panelists’ experiences and their journey of self-development and self-realization.

“Before one begins the process of self-development, there needs to be a trigger of self-awareness for the need to change,” observed Anuradha.

“Self-development revolves around how much time you spend with yourself. You need to go through a process of introspection,” added Jai.

‘Saturday Musings’ is a monthly meet organized by the Alumni Office of IIM Bangalore which will act as a forum for interaction, discussion and sharing of ideas between industry leaders, alumni, faculty, students and staff of IIMB. The sessions are generally held on the third or fourth Saturday of every month.
