Anusmaran 2016 celebrates IIMB’s engagement with its illustrious alumni

04 June, Bengaluru: “IIMB is not in competition with other IIMs. It’s good for the country if there are several good academic institutions. Essentially, our achievement as a leader is because we are in competition with ourselves and we try to do better than what we did earlier,” said Professor Raghavan Srinivasan, Director Incharge, IIMB, highlighting the institute’s achievements while the  alumni at Anusmaran 2016, the annual IIMB alumni meet, today (Saturday), cheered loudly.

Explaining that IIMB stands on several pillars of success, the Director Incharge said: “First, it is the selection process that gets IIMB its outstanding students and extraordinary support staff. Second, the DNA - the first part of which is that we experiment, conduct pilot activities, perform testing and face failures in some of the activities undertaken. IIMB is future-driven and unless you fail, unless you take the risk, you don’t go ahead. The second part of the DNA is that we have a sense of humor, we are willing to laugh at ourselves, and we take our work very seriously but don’t necessarily take ourselves seriously. We admire our history but we don’t let it dominate us. These parts of the DNA come together, in terms of technology, and whether it’s disruptive classrooms or MOOCs currently, we are the forerunners in the country. We started MOOCs a year and a half back and within the MIT, Harvard, edX platform we are the fastest growing start-up. We have 12 courses already going in a year and we will have 28 by the end of this year.”

About the third and the most important pillar – the alumni, Professor R. Srinivisan said: “We, as faculty, see the transformation when a student becomes an alumnus and it’s a huge transformation. Our reputation has been built by our alumni and they enhance the IIMB brand.”

This set the tone for Anusmaran 2016, the meet which saw the institute's alumni, from across batches and programmes, come together. The event, organized by the Bengaluru Chapter of the IIMB Alumni Association, marked the launch of a new round table format designed to give attendees a chance to interact with alumni members who are accomplished leaders in the business and entrepreneurial world.

“Anusmaran has become a part of our lives. We meet with fellow alums and share, learn, engage, have fun and enrich our experience. We have tested many formats, most have been well appreciated. This year we have reinvented it to make it more relevant, vibrant and happening," said Navin Kumar (PGP 1999) and Convenor for the event.

Harish Mittal (PGP 1988), President of the Bengaluru Chapter of the IIMB Alumni Association, spoke of the ‘ifs and buts’ one generally debates while making the choice to live one’s dream. “Today we have the opportunity of finding answers to questions holding us back, from our alums, who have lived their dream, who have done what it takes to achieve their dreams. We have 24 of our celebrated, successful alums, who have given us their time and who are willing to talk to us about what it takes to make that change. How has the journey been? What were the hurdles? Is there a sense of satisfaction? Today is your chance to know and emulate them to achieve your dream. Let them inspire you to live your dream,” he said.

Re-launching the IIMB Alumni magazine, Professor Vasanthi Srinivasan, Chairperson, Alumni Relations, IIMB, and faculty from the Organizational Behaviour & Human Resources Management area, said: “The alumni engagement has grown exponentially over the years. Several of our alumni are making waves. We want to celebrate these accomplishments and build a vibrant alumni network. Similarly, the faculty of the institute have contributed through thought leadership. Our alumni should be aware of what is happening with the faculty and the institute in a deeper and more meaningful manner. The new look and feel of the alumni magazine should be engaging for our alumni.” The Flip book is currently available at this link for online viewing: http://online.fliphtml5.com/wpzl/ttvs/#p=1

This year’s gala also saw the relaunch of the IIMB Alumni Association website. Rahul Das (PGP 2004), who helms the firm Fourth Ambit and has led the redesign of the website, says: “This is not just a website, but an online community-building platform. It would anchor the most credible and comprehensive database of IIMB alumni. It would help an alumnus to tap the complete potential of his/her alumni community by creating value across themes like entrepreneurship, career, professional skills and nostalgia.” The website can be accessed at www.iimbaa.org

The word ‘Anusmaran’ means ‘reminiscence’ in Sanskrit, and interestingly, it was the grandmother of a student who aptly suggested this name, in 2002. Since its inception, Anusmaran aims to bring IIMB alumni together irrespective of their batches and programmes. Anusmaran has become bigger over the years as the alumni connect of IIMB has grown tremendously, from five chapters to 15 chapters worldwide now.

‘Anusmaran 2016’ was indeed a platform to engage, energize, and enhance.
