Forty-four participants receive certificates after completing IIMB’s Advanced Management Programme

The programme focusses on functional areas of management like Marketing, Finance, Operations, Strategy, Leadership, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, as well as internationalization using global case studies

14 December, 2017, Bengaluru: Having bolstered their skills in managing today’s dynamic competitive business environment and driving organizational agenda for growth and performance, 44 business leaders with industry experience of more than 15 years received their certificates after completing the Advanced Management Programme (AMP) at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), on December 9 (Saturday), 2017. Their families were present too, cheering them for successfully completing the year-long AMP that IIMB launched in January this year.

Professor G. Raghuram, Director, IIMB delivered the valedictory address and distributed the certificates to the programme participants. In his address, he stressed on the importance of logistics and infrastructure in the growth of the economy and outlined the structural weaknesses in this sector. He felt that the recent move to GST will help in better integration of infrastructure and services in this sector. He also exhorted the participants to pay attention to people, and delivery processes being followed by transport agencies towards service quality and not focus only on cost. He advised the participants to graduate to industry leaders and play a role in increasing the level of professionalism in the logistics sector through industry forums. He also spoke about the India-Japan Study Centre at IIMB, launched in September 2017, and how it was motivated by the desire to learn some of the best practices from Japan as a society, especially in these domains.

The AMP participants were senior leaders from the top names in IT – both Indian and MNCs, manufacturing, telecom, retail, capital markets, consulting and so on, and across functions such as marketing, sales, finance, customer fulfilment, human resources, production, operations and so on. IIMB as a school has tried to ensure diversity in the class, which facilitated valuable cross-industry learnings. Prof. R Srinivasan, one of the course Directors, who is also the Chairperson, Executive Education Programmes at IIMB, said that a lot of effort has been put in to create a diverse cohort so that the classroom sessions serve as an effective medium to stimulate different perspectives.

The programme is based on the pillars of personal mastery, strategic & functional leadership, strategic decision making, global business awareness, and strategy & leadership. The course is not designed to teach management theories from scratch as most of the participants who come with an average of 20 years’ experience, are already exposed to different elements of that. Instead, what the course does is makes the participants rethink and challenge the assumptions that have formed the basis of what they do and how they do it.  Professor Vasanthi Srinivasan, one of the co-founders of AMP says that the very genesis of the AMP was based on the need of senior executives to reframe their lens and make a fresh enthusiastic start in their career, ultimately leading to higher success.

The programme took participants through all the functional areas of management, namely, Marketing, Finance, Operations, Strategy, Leadership, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. This equipped the group to comprehend business ecosystem, environment and the nuances. The group got an amazing opportunity to learn internationalization using global case studies.

As one of the participants Prasad Diwakar, Director, South Asia, Heico Companies LLC, said: “The course can be instrumental in catapulting a middle manager to senior leadership as it helps one connect the dots and see the organization as a whole, rather than in parts.” This, he believed, helped him bring to the forefront his entrepreneurial skills and expand his company’s presence in South Asian countries.

Lincy Therattil, Management Consultant with a reputed firm, said globalization is here to stay. “Although we are constantly bombarded with news about the US economy, another important market – Europe, is often missed out. Our international immersion with HEC Paris, a globally recognized management school, brought to the forefront how the European Union as a combined entity exerts significant influence on the global economy. Several industry visits in Paris helped us appreciate Europe’s contributions to the global economy and also France’s technical prowess and innovation bent,” she observed.

The highlight of the Advanced Management Programme at IIMB was that the group had immense opportunities to learn from, and interact with, world-class faculty, soon-to-be entrepreneurs and industry leaders, as an integral part of the programme. The numerous techniques, tools and instruments used in the leadership and personal growth areas require one to participate seriously and sincerely, skills that can be honed through this Executive Education Programme offered by IIM Bangalore.
