Professor Rusha Das shortlisted for Best Doctorate Award by Academy of Management, Critical Management Studies for Highly Commended category

Prof. Das’ doctoral research delves into the political intricacies of Environmental Impact Assessment regulation changes in India

27 June, 2024, Bengaluru: Professor Rusha Das from the Public Policy area at IIMB has been shortlisted for the coveted Academy of Management Critical Management Studies Best Doctorate Award for the Highly Commended category. The AoM CMS division is dedicated to promoting management research and education that interrogates relations of power and control and giving voice to marginal and oppressed voices.

Prof. Das has been invited to present her dissertation ‘Changes in environmental impact assessment (EIA) regulation in India: Exploring the political dynamics from a neo-Gramscian perspective’. In her study, Prof. Das states that Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is traditionally seen as a scientific tool for sustainable development, ensuring that economic projects consider their environmental effects in decision-making. However, the EIA regulatory process has become politically contentious, involving various stakeholders with differing power, interests, and beliefs.

Prof. Das obtained her PhD from IIM Ahmedabad, where her research focused on analyzing the political dynamics surrounding changes in environmental impact assessment (EIA) regulations in India, utilizing a neo-Gramscian perspective. She was honored with the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship for a Research Fellowship in 2020-21. During this period, she was a visiting scholar at the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy (AHCD) at the Graduate Institute Geneva.

Her primary research interests include environmental politics, policymaking, and governance, utilizing diverse qualitative methods in her research.
