Current Research

Order allocation issues in B2B Electronic Markets

Electronic market places for Business-to-Business (B2B) applications take several forms. Amongst these, “Aggregators” is one popularly available application. The market maker in the case of an aggregator brings together fragmented supply and demand and helps allocate the supply meet demand. We study some of the strategic issues that the market maker faces in this process. We analyze a problem where a market maker on behalf of a buyer allocates a given amount of order among N suppliers each with finite capacity. We model this problem to understand how the market maker could maximize his earnings by addressing certain incentive compatibility issues of the buyers and the supplier.

Design of Online Auctions

Online auctions is one of the popular business models both in B2C and B2B electronic markets. We are currently making an exploratory study of the critical success factors of B2C auctions with data on competed auction history from a range of product categories from three different countries. We specifically investigate if there are significant differences in the bidding patterns between online and offline auctions and the factors that influence the bidding patterns of individuals.

Inventory Control Policies in Product Remanufacturing

Several nations are bringing legislative framework to tackle environmental degradation and excessive consumption of scarce natural resources. Manufacturers are mandated to take back products after customer use. This opens up new research questions especially in the area of Inventory control. We currently study some of the implications of push and pull strategies in periodic review systems.

Development of a software for design of manufacturing cells

Cellular manufacturing/Group Technology is the philosophy behind manufacturing system design for the last three decades. Yet, there is very little effort to design a software to help industrial managers come up with alternative designs and evaluate them. Based on a seed funding from the Ministry of Human Resources Development, a proto-type for such a software has been designed. The software is under testing using some real life data.

MBA Course on Bhagavad Gita

Business Management curriculum provides a variety of theoretical inputs that enables an individual to take decisions for effective running of an organization. In the current state of affairs theses inputs are based mainly on the western paradigm of the “world view”. Moreover, the current management theories are by and large prescriptions for the business organizations. This overwhelming focus on organizations has over time pushed the “individuals” to the residual in the equations. It is increasingly felt that the current ideas do not adequately cover all the issues of major concern to individuals and organizations. This course is an attempt to bring new perspectives using Bhagavad Gita as the main reference frame for culling out ideas from Ancient Indian wisdom.
