“Catalogue your learnings and implement them for they are best valued when utilised”: Kapil Sood, Business Head, Thermo Fisher Scientific, at IIMB’s PGPEM Batch 2020-22 Inauguration

08 May 2020, Bengaluru: “Do not shy away from taking a plunge if the odds of failure are high. Failures are great learning opportunities; what is important is how quickly you rise after falling,” remarked Kapil Sood, Business Head – South Asia, Thermo Fisher Scientific, who was the Chief Guest at the inauguration ceremony of IIM Bangalore’s two-year weekend Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM) batch of 2020-22, held on May 08, 2020. The event was hosted digitally via Zoom video conference given the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

Kapil, having worked through three different industries in over three-decade-long career, shared some of his best learnings with the incoming students. He pointed out, “We are what we are based on our learnings, experiences, and ambitions, which are the three key ingredients to success. Network with your peer groups as it provides acceleration to your thoughts, ideas, and learnings and helps your evolution much faster. Do not operate in your comfort zone. It is important to take a plunge and while you do so, prioritise your happiness followed by growth and a safe environment to work in. Stretch yourself to experience potential failures to groom yourself. Practice humility. Great leaders are humble—they are easy to talk to, create a free, positive environment, and put the organisation’s cause first than personal.”

The PGPEM Batch 2020-22 inauguration took place in the presence of Prof. G Raghuram, Director, IIMB, Prof. Abhoy K Ojha, Dean – Academic Programmes, Prof. Gopal Mahapatra, Chair – PGPEM, Prof. G Sabarinathan, ChairMaster of Business Administration (MBA), One-year fulltime programme, and Chair – Finance & Accounting, and other faculty.

Prof. Sabarinathan welcomed the incoming batch and gave an overview of the programme. Prof. Ojha briefed the students about the administrative set-up of the programme and discussed the nature of engagement required from the students for this challenging programme.

Prof. Raghuram congratulated the new batch stating that they have taken a significant career transition step by joining PGPEM. He pointed out, “This programme is unique and brings its challenges for the participants: having to turn into a student from a professional, continuing to perform, and coping with study-work-life balance. Your ability to bring in your organisational experience in a fresh way adds a different perspective to the programme. It allows our faculty to learn from you. IIMB prepares students to respond to the odds and handle the VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) characteristics of the world efficiently. Try and adapt to the changes, be courageous to take potential risks and focus on what is right for you.” He concluded mentioning that PGPEM is a transformational experience which will shape their attitude over the learning journey at IIMB.

A total of 75 students joined IIM Bangalore’s PGPEM this year from various educational and professional backgrounds and organisations, hence forming a cohort with diversity. Prof. Sabarinathan noted:

  • Female students constitute 17% of the batch.

  • The average work experience of the cohort is 11 years, with minimum experience of 4 years and a maximum of 32 years.

  • 91% come from an engineering background.

  • The average age profile of the PGPEM 2020-22 cohort is 34 years.

  • The IT Products/Services sector (48%) dominates the current cohort. The rest are from Engineering (13.3%), Manufacturing (12%), FMCG/Retail (6.7%), Telecom (4%), Banking/Finance (2.7%), Defence/Embedded Systems (2.7%), Energy (1.3%), and Others (9%).

The PGPEM at IIM Bangalore is a 22-month Executive MBA programme. Participants learn from world-class faculty while strengthening their network through collaboration with peers. Designed for working mid-career and senior executives, the PGPEM is tailored to integrate real-world experience with classroom learning.
