“Integrating Services in South Asia- Trade, Investment, and Mobility”: Professor Rupa Chanda’s book released

"Integrating Services in South Asia- Trade, Investment, and Mobility" the book authored by Professor Rupa Chanda of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) was released by Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi on December 16, 2010.

In this book, published by Oxford University Press, Professor Rupa Chanda explores the prospects for and challenges to service integration in South Asia through an in-depth analysis of services such as telecommunications, energy, tourism, health, and education.

Identifying trends in performance, policy issues, and the status of intra-regional trade and investment initiatives, the book argues the case for services integration under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA). It also stresses the need to address cross-cutting issues of regional mobility of service providers, taxes, transport, trade, research and development, and regulatory cooperation.

Expanding the existing work on South Asian integration to cover services from an intra-regional perspective, this book is an important reference for future academic and policy work in South Asia. The industry, country, and regional level statistics provided by the book serve as a useful resource for taking stock of output, employment, trade, and investment in services in this region.

Timely and relevant in the context of ongoing services negotiations, this book will be useful to students and scholars of development economics, business studies, and South Asian studies, as well as policymakers and development agencies.

Professor Jagdish Bhagwati, University Professor, Economics and Law, Columbia University commented that, "Rupa Chanda has emerged as one of the most profound and thoughtful analysts of trade in services. This is a splendid book that should be read by policymakers and scholars alike."

Isher Ahluwalia, Chairperson, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations says, "Rupa Chanda has very effectively used her strengths as an established and respected researcher in the field of services trade...Her main message is that one needs to look beyond the usual goods trade paradigm of regional integration to consider a wider range of issues, including services, investment, labour mobility, and regulatory cooperation..."

"In this excellent book, Rupa Chanda makes a compelling case that the potential payoffs from regional integration of services markets are both high and attainable", said Bernard Hoekman, Director, International Trade Department, World Bank.
