Of speech and silence: The art of communication

At a two-day workshop at IIMB, Harvard Law School alumnus Bruce Weitzman uses role play to emphasize the

vital role that communication plays in the work environment

Of speech and silence: The art of communication

Mr. Bruce H Weitzman, alumnus of Harvard Law School, conducted a two-day workshop on Oral Communication for IIMB's Administrative Officers and Senior Executives, on September 19-20, 2013.

The workshop, conducted for three hours a day over two days, emphasized that language and communication are as much about what is not said as what is, and knowing how to be polite or not give offence.

Mr Weitzman has over 23 years of experience in the legal profession. Over the past 11 years, he has conducted a number of training programs on Business Communication for professionals and students in India.

"Communication is a huge gift to give any person, as it opens a whole different window on the world," remarked Mr. Weitzman.

He touched upon verbal communication with seniors, peers and subordinates. Using role play, he highlighted the importance of body language during conversation. "The use of right words and appropriate body language will convey precisely your message and have the response as desired," he said.

He emphasized the importance of developing listening skills. "The 'art of listening', though underrated, is an effective tool in employer-employee relations. Let the person in front of you speak at least 12 words before you interrupt," he said.

On the subject of 'feedback', another important instrument in any working environment, he suggested:  "Build hope in your communication. If you cannot find anything positive to say, stay quiet for a moment. Silence sometimes is the best feedback you can give when your opinion is neutral."

Ms. Anjali G S, Administrative Office, Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) office, described the workshop as "enriching" and "useful".  Mr. Nagaraj S, Senior Executive in the Hostels Office, said: "I found the session on being 'right with words' very good." Mr Mathias S A, Administrative Officer, Library, added: "The workshop has taught us to skillfully manage varied requests from external visitors."

Professor S Raghunath, Dean (Administration), IIMB, who welcomed Mr Weitzman to the Institute, spoke to the workshop participants about the importance of clear, concise and coherent communication.
