8 February, 2023, Bengaluru: The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at IIM Bangalore hosted the second Doctoral Consortium on Teaching from 30th January to 2nd February 2023. The batch comprised 21 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students, who are in their concluding stages of Doctoral study, from 13 management institutes and departments across India, which include: IIM Indore, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Kashipur, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Udaipur, ISB Hyderabad, EDII Ahmedabad, IIT Ranchi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur and XLRI Jamshedpur. Four PhD students from IIM Bangalore also participated in the conference.

The consortium was inaugurated by Prof. Sourav Mukherji, Dean, Alumni Relations & Development, and faculty in the Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Management area of IIMB, and Dr. Arun Pereira, MIT-Sloan International Faculty Fellow, and Emeritus Faculty at the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business, Saint Louis University, USA.

Welcoming the students, Prof. Mukherji set the context of the conference. On Day 1, he also conducted two sessions on case-based teaching and case writing. His sessions were focused on understanding the nuances of case teaching and writing, where he engaged the participants in group discussions that involved an exchange of diverse views.

Dr. Pereira discussed the concept of teaching, referring to it as a science as well as an art. He also conducted a session on ‘The Key Drivers of Learning’. Dr. Pereira shared anecdotes from his personal experiences as an instructor to help the participants open up to the idea of classroom teaching.

The second day of the consortium was initiated by Dr. Shekhar Seshadri, former Senior Professor and Head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NIMHANS, Bangalore. He conducted an interactive workshop on body talk where he weaved elements of theatre as a teaching-learning tool. The workshop involved a couple of body language exercises and insightful conversations on how to conduct classes effectively. Through his session, Dr. Seshadri brought in a humanitarian and psychological angle to the event.

Prof. Jitamitra Desai, Chairperson and faculty in the Decision Sciences area of IIMB, held a session on teaching quantitative subjects. The focus of his session was on making teaching and learning of quantitative subjects interesting and relevant.

The participants also got the opportunity to apply the learnings from all these sessions during the Teaching Practicum workshop. Each participant was allowed to choose a topic of their interest and teach it to their peers, whereby they could discover their unique teaching style. Prof. Mukherji and Dr. Pereira evaluated their performances and shared constructive feedback on how they can improvise and deliver sessions more effectively as future teaching faculty.

On the last day of the consortium, faculty of the Economics area Prof. Chetan Subramanian, Dean - Faculty and Chairperson, Centre for Teaching and Learning, concluded the event with a valediction and presented the participants with certificates. He encouraged the participants to try and marry research with effective teaching to become successful academicians.
