Maryland India Business Round Table honour for Professor R Vaidyanathan of IIMB

Maryland India Business Round Table (MIBRT) selected Professor R Vaidyanathan of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) for the Global Leadership in Finance & Risk Management of the year Award (2009), presented on November 19, 2009. Professor Vaidyanathan was honoured for his commitment and outstanding service in promoting best practices in finance, risk management and promoting human development and peace, and economic growth. The MIBRT is a non-profit and public-private partnership established in Maryland, USA to promote business, international relations, peace and human development.

Professor R Vaidyanathan joined IIMB in 1980 in the Finance & Control area. Currently, he also serves as the UTI chair professor, Capital Markets area, and Chairperson, Center for Capital Markets and Risk Management (CCMR) at IIMB. He is also visiting faculty at various national and international universities and colleges. He is also member of various Committees and Centers set up by the Government of India.

Professor R Vaidyanathan is a Member, Secondary Market Committee of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) that provides advice on Secondary Markets, and Member, Technical Committee & Business Intelligence Center (SEBI) which monitors Equities, Derivatives, Currency and Debt. He is also a member of the team selecting software/hardware for SEBI's data warehousing and data mining requirements.

Professor Vaidyanathan, whose key work area is 'Non-corporate sector', is one of the trustees of the New Pension Scheme (NPS) regulated by PFRDA. NPS safeguards the investments of all Central and State government employees who joined service after 1.1.2004. The Trust also takes care of pensions for the unorganized sector.

A frequent columnist in DNA, Hindu Business Line, Indian Express, News Insight and other leading Indian newspapers, Professor Vaidyanathan is often quoted by Wall Street Journal, London Times and The Economist.

On November 8, 2009 Professor Vaidyanathan was invited to deliver a lecture at the Sixth Global Forum for Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding Integrity hosted at Doha, Qatar. He spoke on 'Creating and Maintaining a Culture of Integrity', citing examples of Indian Railways online booking, (irctc.com), BBMP's Tax payment using Payment Gateway and advocated the use of technology as a tool to eradicate corruption.

Business Today magazine during 2006-07 named Professor Vaidyanathan as one of the best ten professors at all IIMs in India. The same year Professor Vaidyanathan was a Jury member for selecting the best banks and mutual funds for Outlook Money Awards 2006-07.

Tax havens, black money and financing of terror are Professor Vaidyanathan's present research areas.
