Abstract: Inclusive growth in India and Japan requires a paradigm shift through rigorous institutional reforms and technological advancements. Achieving genuine economic inclusivity demands strategic policies and collaborative innovations, challenging the existing paradigms to foster sustainable development for all.
The webinar will include discussions which would encompass innovation and entrepreneurship strategies, policy analysis and economic development, shedding light on high technology advancements in many sectors, especially the evolving field of biomedical and life science entrepreneurship sectors in Japan, India and other Asian countries.
Exploring the intersection of Political Economy and International Relations, the webinar will present research focused on addressing inequality in socially diverse contexts. The discussions will attempt to spotlight the role of institutional and technological innovations in empowering marginalized communities, with a special focus on Japan and India. Additionally, the session will highlight significant studies related to rural local government institutions, including grievance redressal mechanisms, the impact of reservations for marginalized groups, and innovative approaches to identifying poverty, providing a comprehensive perspective on inclusive growth in these dynamic regions. The participants will gain valuable insights into the transformative potential of technology and innovation in promoting inclusive development.
About the speakers:
Dr. Kathryn Ibata-Arens is an expert on innovation and entrepreneurship in Asia, science and technology policy, women’s economic empowerment, and inclusive innovation. Her recent research explores technology leadership, innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem development in biomedical industries in Asia. Her award-winning 2021 book Pandemic Medicine: Why the Global Innovation System is Broken and How We Can Fix It analyzes international competition in new drug discovery and access to essential medicines. Her 2019 book, Beyond Technonationalism: Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Asia (Stanford University Press) analyzes national policy and firm level strategy in China, India, Japan and Singapore. She serves on the Executive Council of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE), chairs its Strategic Planning Committee, and is a co-founder of SASE Network Health. She served on the METI-State Department Japan-US Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council (2012-2013), serves on the Board of Directors of the Japan-America Society of Chicago, and as a member of the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC). In 2012, she was a visiting researcher at the Research Center for Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI, Tokyo), Ritsumeikan University Research Center for Innovation Management (Kyoto) (2011-2012), and a Fulbright Fellow at Kyoto University (2010).
Dr. Mamidipudi Ramakrishna Sharan received his PhD from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Subsequently, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Global Development. He has also worked as a researcher and policy economist with research organizations, state governments and the central government in India.
His research centers around questions in development economics and political economy, and focuses on inequality in socially diverse settings and how institutional and technological innovations could empower marginalized groups. He has also worked on grievance redressal mechanisms and the role of local government actors in making them more effective; the consequences of reservation for Dalits (Scheduled Castes) in village local governments; the consequences of reservation for women on corruption and development outcomes (in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh); the NREGA; identifying the poor (in Karnataka).
In addition to research in economics, Dr. Sharan has also published a narrative non-fiction book on village politics in Bihar titled, Last Among Equals in 2021 and a novel titled, Blue in 2014.
