The talk will be led by Prof. Takahiro Sato, Kobe University

14 August, 2025, Bengaluru: The Mizuho India Japan Study Centre (MIJSC) at IIM Bangalore will host a discussion on ‘The Lean Transplant: Challenges of Japanese Management Practices in India’ on August 19, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm IST in Room Q001 at IIMB.

The session will be led by Prof. Takahiro Sato, Professor, and Deputy Director at the Research Institute for Economics & Business Administration (RIEB), Kobe University. Prof. Sato is a specialist in emerging markets with extensive research on India’s economy post-liberalization. The discussion will be moderated by Mr. Saideep Rathnam, COO of MIJSC, a manufacturing industry veteran and Lean expert with 47 years of transformative experience.

The talk will explore the realities of implementing Japanese management systems such as Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and Just-in-Time in India’s manufacturing, service, and digital sectors. It will also examine why some Lean transformations succeed while others stall, and how AI, IoT, and automation are redefining operational excellence.

This event is part of Mizuho India Japan Study Centre, at IIM Bangalore’s commitment to fostering dialogue on cross-cultural management practices and creating a platform for the exchange of high-quality insights on operational excellence and India–Japan collaboration. It acts as a hub for collaborative initiatives between academia, industry, and government agencies in India and Japan across areas of mutual interest.
