CPP Foundation Day Lecture to be delivered online by Mrinal Pande on July 10

The noted journalist will take the audience through ‘Unseen Bipolarity at the Heart of our Media Policies’ at the event

29 June, 2022, Bengaluru: The next Foundation Day Lecture of the Centre for Public Policy (CPP) at IIM Bangalore will be delivered by Mrinal Pande, noted journalist, author and television personality, on ‘Unseen Bipolarity at the Heart of our Media Policies’, at 7.00 pm on July 10 (Sunday), 2022. The event will be held online.

The lecture will consist of two parts: she would talk about the overabundance of policy that remains mostly on paper and creates snarls with a near total lack of autonomy for the Boardrooms in the Public Sector, as in the case of Prasar Bharati. This has resulted in huge unresolved governance issues, since Prasar Bharati was founded in 1997. It is to be noted that Mrinal Pande has served as the Chairperson of Prasar Bharati, India’s public broadcaster that runs Doordarshan and All India Radio.

The other part of her talk would deal with her four-decade long experience with India's private print media which has produced lots and has changed from print to digital, analogue to digital adroitly, but has today very little left by way of policy guidelines. This is in part due to its family-centric structure, and mostly due to its corporatization and revenue needs that makes it a supplicant before various vested interest groups.

The past CPP Foundation Day lectures have been delivered by Steven Wilkinson, Nilekani Professor of India and South Asian Studies, and Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at Yale University; Tridip Suhrud, writer, translator and noted Gandhian scholar, and K K Shailaja, former Minister for Health, Social Justice, and Woman and Child Development, Government of Kerala.

About the speaker: The career trajectory of Mrinal Pande would inspire many. She has been the Senior Editorial Advisor to both NDTV and Doordarshan. She was the Founder President, Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC). She has held eminent positions in the Editors' Guild of India; Executive Council, Jawaharlal Nehru University; Council for National Culture Fund; National Integration Council, Board of Trustees for The Wildlife Foundation of India, etc. A very well-known journalist, she has held editorial positions in top publications of India, including The Times of India Group, Hindustan Times Group, National Herald Group, and more. She has had her work published also in the form of short stories, plays, novels, essays, etc. She is the recipient of several awards including the Padma Shree in 2006, the Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in journalism by The Press Council of India in 2016, and more.
