Virtual lecture to be delivered by K. K. Shailaja, former Minister for Health, Social Justice, and Woman & Child Development, Govt. of Kerala, on the topic: ‘Policy Implications of the Pandemic: Learnings from Managing Covid-19’

28 June, 2021, Bengaluru: The Centre for Public Policy (CPP) at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) will be hosting the third lecture in the CPP Foundation Day Lecture Series on July 10 (Saturday), 2021, at 07.00 pm. The lecture will be delivered by K. K. Shailaja, former Minister for Health, Social Justice, and Woman and Child Development, Government of Kerala, on the topic: ‘Policy Implications of the Pandemic: Learnings from Managing Covid-19’.

The event will be held online through Zoom. It will be simulcast on YouTube.

K. K. Shailaja currently serves as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Mattanur constituency and is Chief Whip of CPI(M) in Kerala Legislative Assembly. She was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1996. She is a CPI(M) Central Committee Member and the State Secretary of All India Democratic Women’s Association and Joint Secretary of its Central Committee.

Shailaja Teacher, as she is fondly known, served for 23 years as a teacher, before she took voluntary retirement and became a full-time leader. She received international attention for her leadership in tackling the Nipah virus outbreak and COVID-19 pandemic in Kerala. In recognition of her efforts, she was invited by the United Nations to participate in a panel discussion on United Nations Public Service Day 2020. She was recognized by Vogue as one of the ‘Women of the Year 2020’. The Guardian described her as ‘coronavirus slayer’ and ‘rock star health minister’. BBC News featured her among a list of Asian women corona fighters. The British magazine Prospect selected her as the world's 'top thinker' of 2020, while Financial Times named her as one of the world's most influential women of 2020. She was invited as a panel member at the third Human Rights Council intersessional meeting for dialogue and cooperation on Human Rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Shailaja Teacher was conferred with the Janani Award 2021 for Public Health Leadership instituted by the Integrated Health and Wellbeing (IHW) Council. She was awarded the Central European University (CEU) Open Society Prize 2021 in recognition of her commitment to public health services.
