Ninety-seven candidates participate in Summer Research Methodology Workshop 2025

Being hosted by the Office of Research & Publications from 19 to 24 May, the workshop consists of two tracks and panel discussion

19 May, 2025, Bengaluru: The Summer Research Methodology Workshop 2025 at IIM Bangalore, being hosted by the Office of Research and Publications (R&P) from 19th to 24th May 2025, kicked off earlier today with the inauguration ceremony and welcoming of the participants. Altogether 97 candidates are taking part in this workshop, which is being conducted in recognition of the importance of research in today’s academic world. It is aimed to benefit academic researchers, specifically PhD students and early career faculty at management institutes/business schools, in the area of research and publication. The six-day workshop, which follows a successful edition of the Winter Research Methodology Workshop held in December 2024, is anchored by IIMB faculty.

Welcome addresses

Programme Director Prof. Deepak Chandrashekar of the Strategy area spoke about IIM Bangalore while delivering the welcome address. He described the Institute’s 50-year journey in the field of management education, accreditations, national as well as global rankings, centres, programmes, and more. “Our vision statement is aligned to the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Bangalore, and we always strive to upgrade ourselves. From focusing on public sector undertakings, IIMB has become a champion of innovation and entrepreneurship. NSRCEL today is one of the top incubators in the country. Entrepreneurship is embedded in our core courses as well as our research. We also place a lot of emphasis on diversity, inclusion and sustainability. We have an Office of Diversity and Inclusion as well as the Sustainability Taskforce. We conduct sustainability audits on campus in order to be able to take appropriate action whenever required, based on the assessments.”

Listing the academic programmes of IIMB, he shared, “We enrol almost 600 students for the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP). We have the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP) and Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM) designed for experienced professionals. We also run the Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management (PGPPM) in a bid to build capacity for the bureaucracy. The N. S. Ramaswamy Pre-doctoral Fellowship (NSR Pre-doc) seeks to help participants from disadvantaged backgrounds, and most of our NSR Pre-doc students have gained PhD positions post completion of the programme. We also have a vibrant Doctoral (PhD) programme, and our online presence through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is highly regarded as well. Our Centres of Excellences act as intermediaries to help put theory to practice. IIMB has close to 110 faculty members engaged in teaching, research, case writing, consulting, etc., keeping up with the competitive landscape of management education. We believe not only in disseminating knowledge, but in creating knowledge as well. We have a new campus which is aimed to provide quality education at the UG level.” He also spoke of the state-of-the-art facilities on campus and urged the participants to explore the same.

Prof. Deepak Chandrashekar went on to introduce the Chief Guest for the event – Prof. U Dinesh Kumar, Dean, Faculty, Chairperson, Marketing area and Data Centre & Analytics Lab, and faculty of Decision Sciences, who delivered the inaugural address. Explaining the importance of the workshop, he said, “Often the papers you submit get rejected by the reviewers due to methodology, and this workshop will teach you how to get it right. You will have the opportunity to interact with experienced academicians and these experts have published in high quality journals. You stand to gain great insight on writing papers from them.”

Programme Director Prof. Sushanta Kumar Mishra, Chairperson of Research & Publications, Centre for Teaching & Learning and C-DOCTA, Editor-in-Chief of IIMB Management Review and faculty of Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Management, provided an overview of the workshop. Highlighting that the purpose of this workshop was to help build capacity in the country, he said, “This workshop will help our faculty colleagues from other institutes to pick up research skills. We hope that you carry the takeaways from the workshop to contribute and create impact in the country.”

“You are a diverse cohort – there will be learning from the class and learning from each other. So, share and spend your time in a positive as well as productive way.”

Explaining the workshop structure, he said that around 12 IIMB faculty members are involved with the workshop and went on to discuss their profiles. “They are all well published in their respective domains.” He also informed that the Editors’ panel will be conducted on the concluding day of the workshop which will include discussions on what it takes to get papers published in top publications. The panel, he said, will comprise Prof. Mukta Kulkarni, Dean, Programmes, Chairperson, Office of International Affairs and faculty of the OBHRM area; Prof. Chetan Subramanian, RBI Chair Professor in Economics, and Prof. Sushanta Kumar Mishra, and will be moderated by Prof. Deepak Chandrashekar.
