The study examines the gendered digital divide in India through the lens of social learning theory and computer self-efficacy. Drawing on large-scale national data, it highlights how contextual factors such as caste, household structure, marital status, and the presence of digitally literate women within families influence women’s confidence in using technology, thereby reinforcing or mitigating the digital divide.
The session will offer participants an opportunity to engage with these findings and understand their broader implications for digital inclusion and technology adoption in India.
Abstract
This study theorizes the relationship between gender and the digital divide by incorporating household, societal, and institutional contextual factors, drawing on social learning theory (SLT) and the literature on computer self-efficacy (CSE). Using large-scale, nationally representative data from India, the study empirically evaluates these relationships. The findings confirm that the gender-based digital divide remains significant. Factors such as caste, household size, marital status, and the presence of digitally literate women in the family significantly influence women’s computer self-efficacy, which in turn shapes the extent of the digital divide.
