Prof. Shubhabrata Das appointed Member of the National Statistical Commission

Decision Sciences faculty member to contribute to India's apex advisory body on domains of national importance

15 June, 2026, Bengaluru: Prof. Shubhabrata Das, Chairperson, Admissions & Financial Aid and faculty member of the Decision Sciences area at IIM Bangalore, has been appointed as a Part-Time Member (Category 2) of the National Statistical Commission (NSC), by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). The commission will operate under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India, for a term of three years.

The National Statistical Commission serves as an apex advisory body on matters relating to the country's statistical system. It provides guidance on statistical priorities, standards, policies, and the quality and credibility of official statistics. Prof. Das joins three other newly appointed members to the Commission, with Dr. Saibal Chattopadhyay, former Director of IIM Calcutta, serving as the Part-Time Chairperson.

A member of the IIM Bangalore faculty since December 1999, Prof. Das has made significant contributions to teaching, research and academic administration over more than two decades. His academic work spans the fields of Statistics, Actuarial Mathematics and Operations Research, with research interests that extend across business forecasting, insurance analytics, logistics, market research and analytics, sports analytics and governance, aptitude testing, health and education, as well as statistical analysis of fuzzy data and measurement and scaling problems.

Over the course of his academic career, Prof. Das has held visiting faculty appointments at several institutions of international repute, including ESSEC Business School, the Indian Statistical Institute Calcutta, the University of Nebraska and the University of Montana.
