Management Programme for Women Entrepreneurs: Inspiring Women to Start Innovative Enterprises

Sria Majumdar, engineering undergraduate from NIT Nagpur, came to IIMB looking for an internship, and ended up writing a book! Sria spent a month on the IIMB campus during May-June 2009 on an assignment attached to the NSRCEL. During the assignment, Sria interacted with nine women entrepreneurs from the Management Programme for Women Entrepreneurs (MPWE) at IIMB and compiled an inspiring book titled 'Inspiring Women to Start Innovative Enterprises'.

This book showcases the lives of a few women from diverse backgrounds who reinvented themselves as entrepreneurs. They created startups and new ventures - mostly on a wing and a prayer. Be it a social enterprise or a commercial one, each case touches all aspects of the business as well as the personal lives of the women who created them. Meeting these women was akin to taking a virtual journey through their lives; empathizing with their hardships in setting up their own business and reveling in their joys.

Sria personally met six of the women featured in the book, and did extended telephone interviews with the others. She was overwhelmed by the warmth and tenacity of the ladies, and was fascinated by the diversity and innovation in the business modules. Support on the book project came from Professor Ganesh N Prabhu and Professor Anjana Vivek of NSRCEL.

The book is available online at http://pothi.com

The genesis of the book was an initiative at NSRCEL to document the project startups of the alumnae of the MPWE in the form of case studies. Conducted by NSRCEL at the IIMB campus every year during April/May, the MPWE is a unique two-month programme designed for women who are interested in taking up entrepreneurial ventures. The participants are a mix of entrepreneurs, wannabe entrepreneurs as well as some persons who are curious about entrepreneurship and are undecided about what they would like to do. Entrepreneurship is a great way for women to develop their potential as business leaders and for them to make a difference to themselves, their family and friends and the world at large.

MPWE is doing its bit for entrepreneurship, slowly but surely, not just in the city of Bangalore, but across the world, with many alumnae scattered across the globe. There is wide variety in the businesses run and managed by these alumnae. Their projects are in different industries and also vary in terms of size and reach. The industries include manufacturing concerns and social ventures, IT product and service companies, consulting firms, restaurants, designer and styling firms, architecture and interior design firms, adventure camps, martial arts centres, art and culture centres, education institutes, online ventures, publications... and many more.

Over the years, MPWE has gained considerable goodwill among entrepreneur circles. Alumnae of MPWE as well as other IIM alumni have initiated scholarships to enable deserving women to participate in the program. Details of the programme, the scholarships and the programme application form are available at http://www.nsrcel.org
