16 September, 2022, Bengaluru: Over 70 CEOs and senior executives from start-ups participated in an online workshop titled, ‘Establishing Corporate Governance to Ensure Your Start-up’s Long-Term Success’, organized by the Centre for Corporate Governance & Citizenship (CCGC) and NSRCEL, the start-up hub at IIM Bangalore, from 5th to 9th September 2022.
The workshop focused on adopting of good corporate governance practices by start-ups. It covered topics such as financial control and risk mitigation, legal requirements and challenges, labour laws, HR challenges for start-ups, and role of VCs/PEs in influencing good governance and regulatory compliances. The sessions were led by industry leaders and academicians.
Sateesh Andra, Managing Director, Endiya Partners, and Navas Meeran, Chairman, Meeran Group of Companies, addressed the inaugural session.
Ajay Nanavati, former chairman, Syndicate Bank and former MD, 3M India, and Prof. S Raghunath, Chairman, South Asia Board of the Academy of International Business, were in conversation on the topic, ‘Is Corporate Governance a Stumbling Block for Start-ups?’
Harish HV, Managing Partner, ECube Investment Advisors, shared his perspective on the ‘Relationship and Interaction between Founders & Entrepreneurs and External Shareholders’.
Prof. Padmini Srinivasan, Chairperson, Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship, and faculty in the Finance & Accounting area of IIM Bangalore, spoke on ‘Financial Controls, Risk Mitigation and Procurement Practices’. Prof. Anil B Suraj, faculty in the Public Policy area of IIMB, made a detailed presentation on ‘Common Legal Challenges Faced By Start-ups and How To Manage Them’.
Nishanth Ravindran, Senior Associate at AZB & Partners, took the participants through Employment Law Compliances and Intellectual Property Rights. Bijou Kurien, Chairman, Retailers Association of India, discussed ‘How VCs/PEs Can Influence Good Governance in Start-ups’. Vivek Kedia, Partner – Risk Advisory, KPMG India, spoke on ‘Importance of Compliance and Fiduciary Requirements for Start-ups’.
Dipali Ved, Talent Head – Consulting, Deloitte India, discussed ‘HR Lifecycle in an Organization’, covering the aspects of talent acquisition, talent management, performance management, compensation, benefits and off-loading.
N S Vishwanathan, Senior Fellow at IIMB and former deputy governor of RBI, spoke on why regulation is important, what should be regulated and how regulation should be – principle-based or rule-based in the context of corporate governance.
