MIJSC webinar on January 13

Prof. Srinivas, Ms. Vats to discuss India and Japanese approaches to building growth ecosystems

07 January, 2023: The Mizuho India Japan Study Centre (MIJSC), a Centre of Excellence at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore, will host its second webinar on its panel presentation series ‘Meijin-Samvad’ aka ‘Expert-Conversation’. This presentation, titled ‘Is Sustainable Growth A Mirage? Indian and Japanese Approaches to Building Growth Ecosystems’ will be held virtually via Zoom on 13 January 2023 from 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm IST (7.30 pm to 9.00 pm JST).

The panellists include Prof. Hari Srinivas, Global Development Research Center at Kobe, Japan, Ex. Programme Officer at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and Ms. Deeksha Vats, Group Chief Sustainability Officer at Aditya Birla Group. This webinar is part of a discussion series about a specific topic amongst a select group of panellists from India and Japan who share different perspectives on a particular topic, with a large audience.

Sustainability and growth have been traditionally considered as the two ends of a spectrum. Economic growth was always considered to be at the expense of the environment, as resources must be exploited to the fullest in order to ensure economic growth. Considering the resource constraints which are increasingly getting highlighted globally, sustained economic growth is looking more like a mirage. However, this binary approach to sustainability and growth is now being increasingly questioned by experts, who feel that a sustainable growth need not be a mirage. Incorporating sustainability principles within the decision-making process, at the Global / National / Corporate levels requires an interdependent approach, linking all the stakeholders. This approach will help build an ecosystem leading to concrete action for sustainable development. Prof. Srinivas will look at the global and Japanese perspective through his GET (Governance – Education – Technology) Matrix. Ms. Vats will speak from a corporate perspective and also on how contextualising to geography plays a major role in the choices we make.

This webinar will also be live streamed on IIMB's YouTube page.
