‘Stop the blame game; start taking responsibility’

“Corruption is the biggest challenge that India faces. But things can change. Start somewhere and we can make big changes,” said Ashwani Lohani, Managing Director and Commissioner, Tourism, Government of Madhya Pradesh.

Addressing the participants of the Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management (PGPPM) at IIMB on Wednesday (June 3), Lohani, who spoke on ‘Transformation of Public Institutions and Programs and the Need and Relevance of Integrity and Ethics in Governance, listed reforms to be made in the work environment in the country.

Emphasizing the need for organizations – in the public and private sectors – to put employee welfare on their priority list, he credited a training program in Germany with changing his outlook. “Everyone wants good delivery. It will only happen if we have a good value system and the right will to achieve. I make it a point to interact with my staff. I address them individually,” he said. Sharing his views on how the performance of an organization can be bettered, he said: “We should empower people and trust them to do their work. At the same time grievances of people must be heard and people should start taking responsibility.”

Derisive of what he termed the “Great Indian Blame Game”, he revealed that it irked him when he heard people blaming the “system”, forgetting that they too belonged to it.

Earlier in the afternoon, Dr. Rajalaxmi Kamath, Chairperson, PGPPM, gave an overview of the ‘Policy Speaks’ series – an initiative of the students of the PGPPM, where eminent individuals address students on issues of public policy, and introduced the topic of the talk. Dr Namita Negi, from the PGPPM batch of 2015-16 introduced the speaker.
