‘Wear the IIMB Alumnus badge with pride’

At Anusmaran 2014, IIMB's flagship alumni event, over 300 alumni engage with their alma mater and participate                          enthusiastically in 3 stimulating panel discussions on Entrepreneurship & Disruptive Thinking

"Of 9700 alumni of IIMB, over 4000 are located in Bengaluru. This means we have an IIMB alumnus in almost every corporate organization. We must engage more actively with the alumni fraternity, the Institute and the larger community," declared Harish Mittal, President of IIM Bangalore's Alumni Association.

Addressing a packed-to-the-rafters auditorium, despite the fact that an IPL match with the host team playing was on in a different part of the City, on Sunday (May 4) evening, Mr Mittal, who is also Founder and Managing Director, Camellia Clothing Ltd, sounded the clarion call for IIMB alumni not just to meet and network but to come up with concrete ways of engaging with their alma mater, especially in the area of mentoring students.

Introducing the theme of Anusmaran 2014 - 'Entrepreneurship & Disruptive Thinking', Mr Mittal quipped, "When I graduated many years ago, we had a grand sum total of 3 entrepreneurs in a batch of 120 of which 2 were Marwaris and 1 was a Gujarati! Along the way, many of us asked ourselves whether we wanted to work for others or for ourselves. That was our turning point. Today, the batch sizes have grown four fold; the number of students opting to become entrepreneurs, joining entrepreneurs or becoming agents of social change has also gone up. And that is why the theme of this meet is Entrepreneurship," he offered.

Dr Devanath Tirupati, Director Incharge & Dean Academic, IIMB, echoed the theme of mentoring and giving back, saying: "As a premier B-school, IIMB has recognized that entrepreneurship and innovation are the way forward for India and for the world. We, at IIMB, encourage this in our own way - we offer a Placement Holiday for our students who choose to take the entrepreneurial route and we have established the NSRCEL to provide access to networks of entrepreneurs."

To pursue these goals, Dr Tirupati observed that the support of the alumni was vital. "All of you here today have an opportunity to mentor our students - both PGP & EPGP ones, through NSRCEL and through innovative engagement initiatives such as 'Shiskhu', which is a 'Follow the CEO' kind of opportunity for EPGP students," he added.

Dr S Raghunath, Dean (Administration), IIMB, provided a brisk overview of the B-school's progress in terms of facilities for the benefit of the alumni and urged them to return to their alma mater, in various capacities, with pride. "We are in the process of constructing 8 more classrooms of 100-seater capacity each; we are setting up video conferencing facilities in classrooms; work is on at our state-of-the-art sports complex," he said, adding that IIMB had been reassigned 110 acres of land near Jigani and called upon the alumni to contribute in terms of their ideas and time to the new campus's design and development.

Earlier in the evening, Rakesh Godhwani, Head - Alumni Office, IIMB, recounted his own journey as an alumnus to the role he currently essays and urged all the alumni to spread the good word about IIMBAA - the alumni website, the alumni office and the work it does in connecting the alumni to their alma mater and helping the bonds between the two grow bigger, stronger and smarter.

Tony Francis, IMBAA secretary who was emcee of the event, had the audience eating out of his hand with his one-liners and repartee. Promising a cool L Square party, lots of music and prizes to be won, he expertly set the tone for the evening. But before the fun and the games, came the three fascinating panel discussions.
