Prof. Sankarshan Basu co-edits Routledge Handbook of Indian Banking and Finance
Comprehensive volume on future of India's BFSI sector to be launched on 8 July 2026
23 June, 2026, Bengaluru: Prof. Sankarshan Basu of the Finance & Accounting area at IIM Bangalore has co-edited The Routledge Handbook of Indian Banking and Finance, a comprehensive new volume examining the evolution, structure, and emerging challenges of India's banking and financial system.
The handbook, co-edited by Prof. Partha Ray, Director, National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM), Prof. Ashok Banerjee, Director, IIM Udaipur, and Prof. Sankarshan Basu, will be formally launched on 8th July 2026, at 5.00 PM, at the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd., Mumbai.
Bringing together contributions from leading academics and industry practitioners, the handbook seeks to make the complexities of India's Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) sector accessible to a wider audience of non-specialist readers. Through analytical yet non-technical discussions, it examines the institutions, markets, regulations, and innovations that have shaped India's financial landscape and continue to influence its growth trajectory.
Comprising 22 chapters, the volume traces the transformation of India's predominantly bank-based financial system from the era of bank nationalization in 1969 to the liberalization and technological advancements that followed the economic reforms of the 1990s. It highlights the increasing role of private participation, regulatory innovation, and digital technologies in reshaping the financial landscape. The book covers a wide range of themes, including banking institutions, financial markets, investment vehicles, regulation, climate finance, and risk management.
Prof. Basu has also co-authored the chapter titled 'Derivatives Markets in India' with Rajeev Kumar Agarwal, an alumnus of IIMB's PhD programme in the Finance & Accounting area. The chapter examines the evolution and significance of India's derivatives markets within the broader financial ecosystem.
The handbook features a foreword by former Reserve Bank of India Governor Duvvuri Subbarao, and is designed as a valuable resource for students, researchers, policymakers, finance professionals, and industry practitioners seeking a deeper understanding of India's rapidly evolving financial sector.
Individuals interested in attending the book launch at the NSE may confirm their participation by 2nd July by writing to: sankarshan.basu@iimb.ac.in / ashok.iimcal@gmail.com / raypartha1@gmail.com
