‘I wish I could study here at IIMB’: Milind Soman

Flagging off Unmaad 2014 on January 30, marathon runner and model finds the IIMB campus delightful

‘I wish I could study here at IIMB’: Milind Soman

Marathon runner Milind Soman flagged off the 'Flash 5k run' at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) as part of inaugural celebrations of Unmaad 2014- 'Dil se Desi'. The actor, model and entrepreneur was in his element as he posed for photographs with students, charmed the TV cameras and shared tips on running and fitness with a young and eager group of runners.

Introducing the concept of the 'Flash 5k run', he suggested that schools and colleges in every town and city take it up to spread the message 'Save Our Planet'.

Clearly delighted by the vast green campus, he exclaimed: "I really wish I had studied here." And when Professor Sourav Mukherji, a committed runner himself, told Milind about IIMB's 'Running Club' and the annual run organized by IIMB called 'Twarun', he declared, "Indeed, running is the perfect way to de-stress for students; the sprawling green campus provides the best environment really."

‘I wish I could study here at IIMB’: Milind Soman

Milind has been serious about running for over a decade now. He has to his credit a record of 1,500 kilometres, across five states in 30 days, to spread the message about the need for a clean, green planet.

"I was thirty-eight years old when I ran my first half marathon, but I was determined to keep at it. I began to run full marathons and then attempted more difficult runs, such as the 1500-km 'green' run from Delhi to Mumbai," he explained.

Describing running as an 'out of body experience', he said: "If you run regularly for 10-15 km, you get into the 'zone', which is like a meditative state. There is no confusion in your head, thoughts enter and leave and you let go of all your pent-up emotions. You reach a spiritual plane because you experience the freedom to control your body. It becomes so effortless that you breathe easily without panting. You are lifted from a regular state of being to a state that is much more relaxing."

He repeatedly said that he had never seen the inside of a gym for many years now and credited swimming for his physique and fitness in his early years. "Swimming toned my body when I was young. Over the last few years, I have come to learn by experience the benefits of running as the perfect fitness regimen. It is an activity that not only promotes well being but also raises immunity levels and improves health," said the man who makes it a point to run two hours a day, thrice a week. "At the age of 48 now, running has ensured that I haven't grown old but have only turned ripe!"

On the experience of running barefoot, he said: "After wearing shoes for 40 years, I started running barefoot five months ago and I realized that even 3mm of rubber is obstructive. Shoes and chairs are the worst inventions ever! You have to have a connection with the ground, which shoes break."

For students who were keen to know his diet plan, he suggested: "Eat well and exercise every day. Your body's efficiency depends on how hard you make it work. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are the last things you need to worry about. You need to keep track of your intake of fibre and water."

With those wise words, the marathon man flagged off the Flash 5k run, cameras and smart phones capturing his every move!
