Professor Trilochan Sastry wins ‘CNN-IBN Indian of the Year Award 2013 in Public Service’

Professor Trilochan Sastry, founder-trustee of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), received the 'CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2013 - Public Service' award in New Delhi on December 20, 2013.

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) was established in 1999 by a group of professors from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad. The forum works to improve governance and strengthen democracy by continuous work in the area of Electoral and Political Reforms and strive to improve governance and strengthen democracy.

CNN-IBN selected ADR in public service category for piloting the PIL which led to the amendment of law which prevents convicted politicians from contesting polls. In 1999, ADR filed Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Delhi High Court asking for (or requesting) the disclosure of the criminal, financial and educational background of the candidates contesting elections. Based on this, the Supreme Court in 2002, and subsequently in 2003, made it mandatory for all candidates contesting elections to disclose criminal, financial and educational background prior to the polls by filing an affidavit with the Election Commission.

CNN-IBN Indian of the Year is the flagship initiative of CNN-IBN in partnership with the Hindustan Times. 'CNN-IBN Indian of the Year' is an award that recognizes those remarkable Indians whose contribution to the nation in the calendar year has strengthened the foundation of Indian society and has helped build Brand India in the process. ADR was selected from a list of distinctive names by jury members consisting of Mr. Soli Sorabjee, Chairman of the Jury, Mr. Deepak Parekh, Mr. Ramachandra Guha, Dr. Sonal Mansingh, Mr. Mohanlal V. Nair, Mr. Geet Sethi, and Mr. Kiran Karnik.

About Professor Trilochan Sastry

Professor Trilochan Sastry is a faculty member associated with the Quantitative Methods & Information Systems area. He was a faculty member at IIM Ahmedabad prior to joining IIM Bangalore. He has been Visiting Professor at the International University of Japan and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and Associate Dean (Research) and Professor- Indian School of Business. The Association of Indian Management Schools adjudged Professor Sastry the 'Best Young Teacher' for the year 1999.

Professor Sastry has been a consultant to various Indian and international corporations. He has worked with ONGC in the Chairman's office. He is a Trustee of Cooperative Development Foundation, Hyderabad; Chairman of Association for Democratic Reforms, and Secretary of the Centre for Collective Development. He received the 'Outstanding Contribution to National Development' award from IIT Delhi in 2005. In 2009, he was invited to be a member of the prestigious Bretton Woods Committee.
