Twaran 2013: IIMB runs ‘for society, for humanity’
October 2, 2013. The day dawned bright and early at IIMB as close to a hundred runners braced for 'Twaran 2013'.
While the 10-km run was flagged off at 6:20 a.m., the 5-km run began at 8 a.m. Participants included those as young as eight years! Eyeing the competition, one of the participants sportingly declared: "It doesn't matter whether you come first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You only need to say, 'I have finished the run!'"
IIMB faculty members and their families, and IIMB alumni, students, officers and staff joined the run. Professor Sourav Mukherjee and Professor Manaswini Bhalla co-coordinated with the organizing team and extended support in making the event a huge hit.
The 'DJemba' team ensured that the runners were in good spirits and good health even as Professor Sreelata Jonnalagedda encouraged the participants.
Akhilesh Chander, from PGP '12 and IIMB Sports Council Secretary, said: "We hope to make 'Twaran' a global event soon. The dream is to include all people, across the globe, connected with IIM Bangalore, to run for a healthy life."
'Twaran 2013' was celebrated not just at the IIMB campus in Bengaluru but in Delhi and Mumbai with active support from the alumni, particularly Ashwin Jain (PGP' 06) and Ravi Yadav (PGP '03). "In less than a year, what started as a simple exercise of spreading the benefits of running has evolved into a tri-city event," said Chander.
Early start
It all started with late evening runs across IIMB's beautiful campus initiated by Ravi Yadav, the Sports Council Secretary. Soon, many people from the IIMB community joined in the running and an FB page was created for the runners' community on July 6, 2012. Support for the running group came from all quarters, including students, faculty members and staff. The 'Foundation Day 2012 Run' had 44 participants. Enthusiastic enquiries from students of the exchange program gave the running club a fillip. Soon, a 'Running Camp' was started, which motivated students to take up running seriously. And, 'Twaran' was born.
