The 37th Annual Convocation of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) was held on March 30, 2012 at the IIMB Campus. This year, 570 students graduated from the Institute in the presence of IIMB Chairman, Mr Mukesh D Ambani and Dr D Subbarao, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, who was the Chief Guest at the event and delivered the Convocation address.
IIMB Director Professor Pankaj Chandra welcomed the guests and gave a report highlighting the achievements during the academic year 2011-2012. Professor Chandra acknowledged the additional support given by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to the Institute to strengthen the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) to give an impetus to advanced research.
Professor Chandra congratulated Career Development Services team for winning 'Best Placement Cell' in India Today Aspire Education Summit 2012. IIMB hosted 35 school children from the remote parts of Kashmir. The Institute also hosted South Asian Youth Conference (SAYC), where 120-strong team of young decision makers from SAARC Countries discussed trans-boundary issues. Professor Chandra acknowledged the achievements of fellow Faculty and students.
Mr Mukesh D Ambani presented 570 students with their graduation diplomas. The Chief Guest, Dr D Subbrao presented the Gold Medals to eight students.
In his Convocation address, Dr Subbrao said that Globalization is one of the biggest challenges that India is facing. Calling it a double-edged sword, he said; "No matter what career you pursue or where you choose to work, you will have to learn to manage globalisation in ways that will maximise its benefits and minimise its costs. With degrees in hand today, you will be entering a world that is more globalised than the one I had spent my career in. While globalisation offers students opportunities, it also poses ruthless challenges. Nothing illustrates this better than the global financial crisis of 2008-09," he said.
Talking about developments at RBI, he said: "The challenge the Reserve Bank faces on account of opening up the economy is best explained by the impossible argument which asserts that a country cannot simultaneously maintain all three policy goals of free capital flow, a fixed exchange rate and an independent monetary policy."
He told students that the challenge of this generation will be to accelerate India's growth rate and make that growth inclusive. "Though globalization poses complex policy challenges, it also offers immense opportunities. And you will need to manage that challenge in an increasingly globalizing India. I am sure you will find being a part of that endeavour intellectually exciting and emotionally fulfilling", he asserted.
Delivering the Chirman's speech, Mr Ambani said India had immense opportunity and potential for growth and students should explore it. "We have to pursue our passion relentlessly to succeed," he said. He urged students not to lose the 'Indian soul' and try to be masters of Social Business Architecture.
