On 1st February, 2012, IIM Bangalore organized a one-day Round table on "Managing and Protecting Creative Content in Cinema, Performing Arts and Mass Media". The Round table was designed by Professor A. Damodaran of IIMB. A select group of eminent film directors, celebrated actors, dancers and choreographers, shared their views on the act of creation, creativity, and creative content. The Round table also witnessed presentations by the electronic media on content management. The Round table also addressed sustainability issues by focusing on the case of the Greening of the Mumbai Marathon. Also presented on the occasion was the novel agenda of "Creativity for Sustainability", developed at IIMB.
Professor Pankaj Chandra, Director IIMB, welcomed the distinguished speakers and the participants who were also drawn from the leading Media and Film Institutes in Bengaluru.
The highlight of the Round table was the screening of Mr. Adoor Gopalakrishnan's documentary on "Koodiyattom", the Sanskrit Dance-Drama, which won recognition as "a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity" from the UNESCO in 2001. Dr. Sudha Gopalakrishnan, noted Koodiyattom scholar, provided the introduction to the documentary.
Shri Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shri Girish Kasaravalli, renowned film makers, Ms. Leela Samson, eminent dancer (also Director, Kalakshetra, Chairperson Central Sangeet Natak Akademi, and Central Board of Film Certification) presented their perspectives on creations and creativity, while Shri T.C.A. Ranganathan, (CMD, EXIM Bank of India) spoke about the relevance of creative content in financial decision-making in relation to the film industry.
The breakout sessions had film directors Mr. Nila Madhab Panda, Mr. V.K. Prakash, and Mr. K.M. Chaitanya, speaking on their works in the light of the overarching theme of creativity. Ms. Vani Ganapathy, eminent Bharatanatyam dancer, spoke about her vision of creativity, while the noted actor Ms. Nandana Sen related the concept of creativity to freedom of expression.
Mr. Hajime Sato, Noh practitioner from Japan, demonstrated a Noh sequence to the delight of the audience, while Ms. Leela Samson elaborated on the possibilities of creativity in the context of Bharatanatyam.
Mr. Sameer Kapoor of NDTV, and Mr. Gaurav Banerjee of STAR TV, dealt with the challenges of content management in the electronic media, while Ms. Esther Kar, of the Indian Information Service, outlined the policy issues.
Mr. Vivek Singh of Procam International, elaborated on the challenges of setting up the Mumbai Marathon and explained how the marathon has instilled a civic sense of sustainability.
In the concluding session, Professor A. Damodaran, IIMB, presented the agenda on "Creativity for Sustainability". Dr P S Mahesh, PGPPM alumnus, proposed the vote of thanks.
