The 36th Annual Convocation of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) was held on March 31, 2011 at the IIMB Campus. This year, 578 students graduated from the Institute in the presence of IIMB Chairman, Mr Mukesh D Ambani and Mr Kapil Sibal, Union Minister of Human Resource Development and Communications & Information Technology, who was the Chief Guest at the event and delivered the Convocation address.

IIMB Director Professor Pankaj Chandra welcomed the guests and gave a report highlighting the achievements during the academic year 2010-2011. Professor Chandra acknowledged the EQUIS accreditation awarded by the European Foundation for Management Development and noted that IIMB being the second institute in India to be thus accredited. "For the third time in succession IIMB has been recognized as the No 1 Management School in Central Asia by Eduniversal in Paris", he said.

In a first of its kind in India, IIMB has inked a partnership deal with Harvard for distributing teaching cases developed at IIMB. Professor Chandra informed the audience about the institution of two research chairs; one by Canara Bank and the other by the Apeejay Surrendra Group. In the course of the year, IIMB signed a MOU with IISc to formalize academic collaboration.

Mr Mukesh D Ambani presented 578 students with their graduation diplomas. The Chief Guest, Mr Kapil Sibal presented the Gold Medals to 9 students.

In his Convocation Address, Kapil Sibal said India will soon be among the top three economies of the world and in this changing curve the students have to carve a niche for themselves with ethical business ways. "Some of you will be on the Fortune 500 companies list while others will have created them". In this fast paced life, the inner sense or moral conscience will make you a competent manager or a great manager. So, he cautioned students to keep that 'moral compass' on the north (right) side. Mr Sibal advised students to follow the path of integrity and ethics.

Delivering the Chairman's speech, Mr Mukesh Ambani said India is competing with the world and in the process of becoming a major economic power. India has the ability to lead global transformation.

The world has changed from linear mode to exponential, and the youth of the country will achieve more in a short span of time. Information Technology is driving the change and in this digital world, India is at the forefront. Mr Ambani mentioned three fundamentals that will shape the future: the progress in Genetics; progress in nano-technology; and progress in artificial intelligence which automates most work.

He urged students not to lose the 'Indian soul' and try to be masters of Social Business Architecture. "Be a part of the ownership team and generate wealth for nation building", he advised.
