Workshop on Knowledge Based Businesses organized by NSRCEL & IIE, Gothenburg held at IIMB

The NSRCEL at IIMB in collaboration with the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE), University of Gothenburg, Sweden organised a two-day workshop on Knowledge Based Businesses at the IIMB campus on October 4 & 5, 2010.

 

In the inaugural session, Professor K Kumar, Chairperson NSRCEL welcomed the participants and outlined the scope of the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to provide a platform for dialogue between industry, policy makers and academics to engage with the challenges of developing and managing knowledge based businesses in emerging markets. The dialogue during the workshop was expected to help in developing a training and research agenda for dealing with Knowledge Based Businesses.

 

In his inaugural remarks, IIMB Director Professor Pankaj Chandra highlighted the need for such a workshop at this particular juncture. The core issue was to understand and face the challenges of developing and managing knowledge based businesses in emerging markets, and at the same time to develop a regulatory framework for the knowledge based businesses -  be it Information Technology, Pharmaceuticals, Bio-technology or farming.

 

Chief Guest Professor Rolf Wolfe, Dean, School of Business Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg expressed his delight at the partnership between IIE and NSRCEL that had resulted in this particular workshop and several other projects that were on the anvil.  

 

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Harkesh Kumar Mittal, Adviser & Member Secretary, National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.  He shared his experience in the field and provided several anecdotes that illustrated the potential in developing intellectual property that would support entrepreneurial activity and sustainable business enterprise.

 

Professor Ashok Thampy set the agenda for the two-day workshop and explained the thought process behind the themes for each of the sessions. He explained that the individual theme based sessions will culminate with a participative session, World Café, where the participants will have an opportunity to provide their ideas and suggestions for both the teaching and research agenda.

 

Session 1 on the first day of the workshop was based on the theme titled "Knowledge Based Businesses: Issues and challenges", the key speakers being Professor Ulf Petrusson, Director, Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, University of Gothenburg; Mr. Vikesh Mehta, General Manager, Innovation at Wipro Technologies and Mr. Aroon Raman Chairman, Karnataka State Council at Confederation of Indian Industry & Managing Director, Raman Fibre Science Pvt. Ltd.

 

Session 2 addressed the theme of "Knowledge Based Businesses: Processes and Ecosystem", with Dr. Kalyan C Kankanala, Chief Knowledge Officer and Co- Founder, Brain League IP Services; Mr. Parag Dhol, Director, Inventus Advisory Services (India) Pvt Ltd,  and Professor Rishikesha T Krishnan, Jamuna Raghavan Chair Professor of Entrepreneurship at NSRCEL and Professor of Corporate Strategy & Policy at IIMB addressing the audience.

 

On the second day of the workshop, Session 3 was based on the theme of "Knowledge Based Businesses in Emerging Economies" and was addressed by Ms. Sujatha Narayan, Manager Technical, 3M India Healthcare; Professor S. Chandrashekar, Professor, Corporate Strategy and Policy, IIMB; Mr. Srini Rajam, Chairman and CEO, Ittiam Systems and Professor K Kumar Chairperson, NSRCEL.

 

Session 4 focused specifically on the verticals of Knowledge based Businesses with Dr Anand Anandkumar, Chairman and Managing Director, Cellworks India Pvt Ltd; Dr Boo Edgar, Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, University of Gothenburg; Ms. Anandi Sharan, Head of Strategy, Desi Power; and Dr Rangesh, Head- New Product Initiatives, R&D, Himalaya Drug Company as the key speakers.

 

In a befitting finale, the workshop's last session was the World Café, an innovative session with the audience as the participants. Key questions were posed to the groups, who then presented their thoughts and constructive ideas so as to take the workshop theme forward. The leader of each table at the Café presented the summary of the discussions at their table with respect to each of the questions posed.

 

In his concluding remarks, Professor Ashok Thampy reiterated that the  outcome of the workshop will be a set of research projects to address some of the issues of relevance to knowledge based businesses, culminating in an academic conference in the year 2012 and proactive steps towards developing a course on managing knowledge based businesses designed for the emerging market context. He also thanked the team of scholars from the University of Gothenburg for actively guiding the preparations for the workshop and their inspiring presence at the workshop. The workshop was coordinated by Professor K. Kumar, Chairperson, NSRCEL, Professor Ashok Thampy, faculty member in the Finance & Control area at IIMB, Professor Ulf Petrusson, Director, Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, University of Gothenburg, and Professor Suresh Bhagavatula of NSRCEL.
