Centre for Public Policy organizes panel discussion on “The Challenges of Rapid Urban Growth”

The Centre for Public Policy at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and the Forum for Industrial Interaction, in association with Harvard Business School - India Research Centre, Harvard Business Publishing, EMC2 and Metro organized a Panel Discussion on the "The Challenges of Rapid Urban Growth: Readiness of Critical Infrastructure Institutions in Urban Mega-centres" at the IIMB campus on July 14, 2010.

Invited panelists Mr Ajai Kumar Singh, Director General of Police, Government of Karnataka; Mr Manish Sabharwal, Chairman TeamLease Services; Mr Aromar Revi, International consultant and Director of the Indian Institute of Human Settlements; and Professor Tarun Khanna, Jorge Paulo Lemann Professor at the Harvard Business School, shared their views and perspectives on the topic. Professor Rajeev Gowda, Chairperson of the Centre for Public Policy at IIMB moderated the discussions.

The panel discussion was followed by the launch of the book "Winning in Emerging Markets - A Road Map for Strategy and Execution" by Tarun Khanna and Krishna G Palepu, published by Harvard Business Press. In this book, the authors outline a practical framework for developing emerging market strategies, based not on broad categorical definitions like geography, but on a structural understanding of these markets. The framework describes how "institutional voids" - the absence of intermediaries like market research firms and credit card systems to efficiently connect buyers and sellers - create daunting obstacles for companies trying to operate in emerging markets. Understanding these voids - and learning how to work with them in specific markets - is the key to success.
