35th Annual Convocation held at IIMB

The 35th Annual Convocation of the India Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) was held on March 29, 2010 at IIMB Campus. This year, 501 students graduated from the Institute after successfully completing their respective programmes.

Dr K Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Chairman, Space Commission and Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr K Radhakrishnan is an alumnus of IIMB, having graduated in 1976, the first batch of the PGP of IIMB.

IIMB Director Professor Pankaj Chandra welcomed the guests and presented highlights of the achievements of the Institute during the academic year 2009 - 2010.

IIMB Chairman and Reliance Group Chairman and Managing Director Mr Mukesh D Ambani presided over the function, and handed over the Fellow titles and Post Graduate Diploma honours to the graduating students.

In his inaugural address, Professor Pankaj Chandra said, "IIMB continues to sustain its leading position, among management schools globally". For the second consecutive year, the Institute has been ranked as the # 1 business school in South & Central Asia by Eduniversal in Paris. IIMB was also ranked # 6 in the Asia-Pacific region in the QS Global 200 Business Schools 2009 survey - the only school in India amongst the top ten.

Professor Chandra also informed the audience about the institution of three Young Faculty Research Chairs during the year 2009-2010. These Chairs were awarded to Professors Arnab Basu, Mukta Kulkarni and Rejie George Pallathitta.

In his address, Dr Radhakrishnan urged the students to dream and set their vision and goals high. He added that even the smallest ideas can create the biggest innovations. He also emphasized the need for strong values and strength of character.  "Inculcate the spirit of Leadership, but judge by the number of leaders you help create and not by how many you had led. Measure your success not by wealth and fame and do remember to contribute to the society that helped you grow," he said.

Speaking about space sciences, Dr Radhakrishnan said, "The Indian space programme is now on the threshold of a transition into developing newer capabilities, perspectives and direction. Space should be the bedrock on which the national systems for societal and other national imperatives are built. And I would expect many of you to become partners in this process."

Later Dr Radhakrishnan awarded the gold medals to the significant achievers in each course.

In the Chairman's address, Mr Mukesh D Ambani said that the world is emerging from a severe economic shock and is resetting itself to face newer economic realities.

Mr Ambani said India was one of the earliest countries that emerged out of the economic meltdown. The economic centre of gravity is now slowly but steadily shifting to Asia. He said that this century is poised to become India-centric and we are on the path of becoming a major economic power.

He said that the competition for Indian graduates will be more and more global as increasing number of professionals from other countries are aspiring to work in India. "These are the new dynamics of a new and promising India," he said. Mr Ambani told students that they are graduating at the most appropriate time for shaping the new and resurgent India.

The power of the youth will be central to shaping the future of India. The opportunities before each and everyone graduating are historic. "Thirty years ago, when I entered the economy the opportunities before me were not even a fraction of what each of you has before you." Mr Ambani said that the young men and women graduating will have the privilege to be part of this new and fascinating India. "A new brave world lies ahead of you. For that we have to be fearless and take on the world," he concluded.
