Centre for Software & IT Management at IIMB to host talk by Dr. Abhipsa Pal as part of the webinar series ‘Top IS Publications from India’ on Nov 28
Dr. Abhipsa Pal will present her study, The risk-risk trade-off (R2T) framework: Examining contact [cash] versus contactless [mobile] payment usage
18 November, 2025, Bengaluru: The Centre for Software and Information Technology Management (CSITM) at IIM Bangalore will host a webinar on November 28, 2025, from 03:00 pm to 04:30 pm (IST), led by Dr. Abhipsa Pal, Information Systems area, faculty at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. She will present her research on her co-authored research paper titled, ‘The risk-risk trade-off (R2T) framework: Examining contact [cash] versus contactless [mobile] payment usage’, published in the journal Decision Support Systems. Those who register will receive a Zoom link for the webinar.
The webinar series, ‘Top IS Publications from India’, initiated by CSITM, aims to honor and publicize research papers on Information Systems successfully published in reputed management journals (FT50 / senior scholar premium IS journals) by research scholars from Indian B-schools. The authors will not only present their studies but also share the challenges faced and insights realized from their publication journeys. It is hoped that this series will encourage and guide budding IS researchers to confidently target reputed journals. This initiative also aims to strengthen connections within the Indian IS research community, opening potential opportunities for future collaboration.
About the speaker:
Dr. Abhipsa Pal is an Assistant Professor and Group Coordinator (MIS Group) at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. Prior to this, she was a faculty member at IIM Kozhikode and completed her PhD in Information Systems from IIM Bangalore. She previously worked as a senior software engineer at Infosys. Her research interests include mobile payments, technology adoption, ICT for development, and financial inclusion. She has published in top-tier international journals such as Research Policy, Decision Support Systems, Information Systems Frontiers, and Journal of Computer Information Systems. Her research was recognized with the runner-up award for the most innovative paper at the European Conference on Information Systems in 2023. Her teaching interests span Digital Transformations, Emerging Technologies, Digital Business Models, and IS Research Foundations and Methods.
Abstract of the study:
While mobile payment adoption has been influenced by contextual triggers, existing literature largely overlooks risks associated with alternatives like cash. This study addresses this gap by developing the risk-risk trade-off (R2T) framework, inspired by the theory of substitutes of hazardous substances. The framework evaluates how individuals make payment decisions by balancing two sets of risks, those associated with mobile payments (e.g., cybercrime) and those associated with cash (e.g., health risks from infectious disease transmission). A survey of 1,403 participants in India, complemented by qualitative responses, validates this model. The study extends mobile payment literature by accounting for the risks of the substitute technology (cash), offering nuanced insights for understanding user behavior in various risk risky contexts.
