Abstract: There is an urgent need to future-proof HRM by exploring how HR roles and competencies evolve as organizations develop agile and responsible strategies for technology-human collaboration within HR practices. Through conjoined agency and role theory, utilizing a qualitative case study approach across four diverse organizations, the research investigates the emergent dynamics of assisting, arresting, augmenting, and automating conjoined agencies. Conjoined agencies enable HR professionals to deliver highly personalized solutions, skillfully navigate the challenges of algorithmic management, and create shared benefits for various stakeholders while upholding ethical standards and responsible data management practices. All of these illustrate the transformation of traditional HR roles, shifting from operational executors to strategic business allies as they adapt to future societal challenges and the emergence of two critical competencies: Ethical Data Usage Steward and Technology Evangelist. In contributing to the theoretical framework of future-proofing HRM, the study provides insights into how responsible and ethical HR paradigms arise through mindful collaboration between humans and technology. The findings provide practical guidance on developing agile competencies essential for adapting to rapid technological evolution, thereby ensuring that HRM remains relevant and impactful in addressing contemporary grand challenges and technological disruptions.
